Tires

I'm going to need new tires very soon. I occasionally pull a 10,000 lbs + trailer on the farm. Most of my driving is highway. On a 1998.5 4X4. What size would work with the stock rims. I'm looking at 285's

what width are those wheels?? If they're the stock aluminum wheels, then they'll work perfectly with 285s. If they're the chrome/steel stock wheels then the 285s are the largest you should go due to the width of the tire. Any larger and the tire will crown and cause accelerated wear in the center. Also depends on your rear end gearing as well. I have a friend who's dad has a 2001 with 3.55 gears and his mileage/power dropped when he went to 285's. Just some food for thought.

Just my 2 cents worth and I'm sure alot of people will say something different but in all my experimenting with tires I found that switching to something other than the size the vehicle came with isn't always the smartest move. I just went up 2 sizes to a 285 and I will not be going that route again, its just not the same as the stockers. They do look much nicer under the large wheel openings but they don't drive as nice. I did make the mistake of going from a 10 ply down to an 8 but seeing that the weight rating was very close and I don' t carry any weight I thought they would be fine. NOT!!
