Tire size on a dually

I have a 97 dually and would like to run a little taller tire. The 235/85 is what I would like to run. I realize there isn't a lot of difference but this is what all the other trucks/trailers run on the ranch and it would be much eaasier to have consistancy. Has anyone ran this tire and if so has there been any issues with the duals touching. I often run at around 25k to 26k GCW.

Thank you,
Ben

I'm pretty sure that '02 would have had different back spacing on the rims. FWIW, I plan on running 235's on my '95. On the other hand, I don't load heavy.

That's what I've been running for years. The dualls don't rub.

Dodge changed the backspacing on the dually wheels when they went from the 215/85 (as on my 1996) to the 235/85 (as on my 2002) tires. If you use the 235/85 on the early 2nd generation duallies, I would check very closely for tire sidewall contact when heavily loaded.

94 - 99 duallies were factory equipped with 215's. The 00 - 02 duallies were factory equipped with 235's and required a change in wheel back spacing to accomodate the wider tire in order to meet safety standards for tire clearance.

FWIW, 235's do fit on the 94 - 99 wheel but the gap between the 2 rears is small. Depending on what you do with your truck, it may or may not be a problem. I run 235's on my 98.5 3500 and did have a very minor rubbing issue when I had my truck loaded down very heavy. You would never know there is a problem unless you chalked the side walls and then removed the outer tire after running with a very heavy load to actually be able to see evidence of rubbing. It is virtually impossible to tell if they actually rubbed any other way. I made some 1/2" spacers and never had a problem since.

The only other problem could occur when the truck has to have a safety inspection.....depending on how strict the inspector/mechanic is, it could fail the inspection for not meeting the legal minimum tire clearance. Though, I would imagine that this instance would be rare.

Anyone know the backspacing on the 00+?? I have 5" backspacing (Ford wheels here) and 235's are a little to close for my tastes.

Dually Tires

I ran 235's on my '99 dually for a while. That was about as wide as I could go with a load on without touching. You can always go wider/taller, but you'll need spacers. Lots of fellers running spacers between the duals, me included. I've never, EVER had a problem with them. You'll get lots of opinions on those!

I'm running 265/70/17 Pro Comp's on my 4.5 Dually. I had originally put an 8mm spacer between the rims so I could maintain clearance and lower tire pressure for improved ride...recently I bumped back up to full tire pressure and removed the spacers and haven't had any problems. I haul a 400 gallon water tank in the back and have never had the tires rub yet.
Stock - 235/80/17 diameter = 31.8" tread width = 9.3"
Pro Comp - 265/70/17 diameter = 31.6" treadwidth = 10.5"

No problems for me. Run tires at max psi when loded.
