Tire height question

I want to go down in size from a BFG 315/70/17. Maybe a hankook 295/70/17 or something similar. I want the height but not the width of the 315. Some say a 285 is taller than a 295. Whats the deal? I'm having a hard time finding true measurements from manufactures.

Please help.

This link will tell you the height in inches, and the difference in size.

275, 285, 295, etc are the widths of the tires.
70, 75 etc is the ratio for tire height off the rim to the width.

25.4 mm = 1 inch, 295/70/17 = 295mm or 11.5 inches tread width/ Hight of sidewall, 70% of tread width= 206.5mm or 8.1 inches/17 inch wheel.
Upper sidewall 8.1" + wheel 17" + lower sidewall 8.1" = 33.2" tall tire.

285/75/17= 11"wide/8.4" sidewall/17"wheel
8.4 + 17 + 8.4 = 33.8" tall tire.

So yes a 285 can be taller than a 295 if the aspect ratio is higher.

I went down from 35'' BFG mud terrains.....to 285/75/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers. I am very pleased. They look good (not quite as good as the 35's) but the handling, better mileage etc...makes it worth it, imo.

I think 285/75/17 tires should have come on our trucks from the factory.

Fuel's going to be back up before you know it and I wish a 275-80-17 would be released. Maybe 34" tall and narrower than the 285's. Roll baby, roll!
