The quickest way to check the timing of the pump is find the mark on the gear housing and VE Pump bolt hole. If you look at the bolt hole visible on the drivers side of the engine and look at the backside of the gear housing, you should see a scribed mark that is marked on the gear housing and the pump bolt hole. They should be lined up. The 2 marks lined up translates to 1.25mm timing. About the only way the pump shaft could slip on the gear and lose its proper spec'd timing would be if the pump had been off and the keyway on the shaft was installed wrong or not put in at all. This type of condition would not allow you to see if the pump was off timing by looking at the marks. The other method involves a dial gauge, the proper adapter for the back of the pump and your engine and pump to be set at TDC. This can be done pretty easy but requires pretty pricey tools to do the job. It is cheaper to go to a fuel pump shop and have them do it with this method.

To change the timing, back off the 3 nuts that hold the VE to the gear housing. You will need a "C" shaped wrench to get to the bottom nut. Next, you will need to back off the bolt in the slotted metal bracket that keeps the pump from vibrating and cracking the gear housing. This is found at the back of the pump. You may also need to loosen the injector line clamps. Be sure and loosen all of them. Now, be sure you have a scribed mark on the pump and gear housing, then, go 1/8" above the mark. This is about 1.4-1.45mm (15*) advance. You will notice lower EGT temps, better top end acceleration, and possibly improved miles per gallon.

You can have a look at some of the pics I have in a photo gallery on another site. It shows various pics of the VE pump, about timing, tweaks etc.
Here's the link..
