timing?

i need to set the time on my brothers truck, pretty well same truck as mine, 97 5spd, i dont have the money right just yet to buy a timing kit, is there any way to set the time back to stock with out a kit, i know about finding no1 tdc, and the pin in the back of timing gear cover to lock pump gear, but is there a way to line the pump up with out a kit? thanks

On the lower part of the pump, at the front of the governor housing is a plug. Pull it out (have a small pail ready, decent amount of oil comes out), get a mirror and a light and have someone bar the engine over. There is a small arm on the pump shaft that will come around. Once it is in middle of the hole, you can take the pin from the plug, and lock the pump. As long as the pump hasn't been changed, this should be the stock timing. Take the engine to TDC on #1, lock the two together, and it should be back to stock.
