Timing question
Got my KDP kit. While my friend, who is a diesel mechanic , is putting that in for me we wanted to bump the timing. Is there any information on how this is done ? He has a cummins but he said he's never advanced the timing. He just lined the pin up with the injection pump and set it to the factory settings. What is it timed at from the factory? What is needed to be done to take it to 15 -16 degrees or I see a few run 15.5 degree's. He's nut dumb but was just looking at some info so it's done correctly. Thanks in advance. Matt

15 to 16 max until you get gov springs, more fuel, bigger turbo, head studs
Do you have gauges IE exh temp?

Yes, I ordered all at once. The KDP kit, AFC spring kit, boost and pyrometer guages, #10 Fuel Plate and 4000 GSK. Looking to install all these things but I wanted the timing bumped up as well. My mechanic has a couple cummins trucks and is familiar with how to set or check factory timing but he has never advanced the timing. Is this a big project ? My understanding on my 98 manual 12 valve is that the factory timing should be 12.5 degrees. Does that sound correct ?

There should be a data plate on the side of the timing cover just forward and a little lower than the injection pump that lists factory timing. Somewhere between 12.3 and 13.5 is normal.
If you pull the valve covers and snug up the stock head bolts to 120 ft lbs, you should be fine with 17 or 18*.
