Timing Cover Gasket or RTV
I just pinned the KDP today. I posted pics in my gallery. My question is that I need to finish putting the cover back on tomorrow. Should I reuse the old gasket with RTV or should I just use RTV and no gasket.

just use the silicone, it works awesome. I know it goes against every thing we've been thought, and this was the only time I ever relied on silicone alone and have no problems

I did the same thing
and make sure u retorque all the bolts equally to 18 ft lbs, and u should have no leaks..

Remember to go sparingly on the sealant when using it, it can cause all sorts of problems if excess gets in the wrong place.

just my KDP yesterday... my old gsk came off intact with no damage.
I simply clean off both surfaces and pull a light layer of my favorite aircraft sealer on old gsk. had a new gsk from dealer sitting right here, but elected to use the old one.
I've never had an old gsk leak when it comes off intact. and reassembled with aircraft sealer.
never have trusted make-a-sealer for large gasket surfaces. used them for smaller tight fitting joints with no problem. on surface that are a royal pita to get back at. Gsk everytime for me...

For about $10 more than the TST kit, I stopped by the local Cummins dealer and bought a tab, crank seal, and a real timing cover gasket. All genuine Cummins parts. Also picked up some Fleetguard air, fuel, and oil filters while I was there.

the genuine cummins filters were actually cheaper than aftermarket.
since my gsk came off intact, allowing reuse. I get to return the $23 gsk. but it sure was nice having a new gsk sitting there.

I bought a new Cummins gasket and used it with a smear of TST-included RTV.. The old metal gasket was in great shape, and if I had it to do over again, I'd just clean the old one and use the RTV on it, or just RTV alone sans-gasket....

Best thing to do , would be a new gasket (cummins or aftermarket) with a very light smear of loctite 515 on each side of the gasket , torque the bolts down proper , and there will never be one drop of oil coming out of there.

If I was doing this for a customer. I'd go new gsk everytime. since this is my own rig, I can afford to take a calculated risk. actually not much of a risk at all. when old gsk comes off cleanly with no damage.
sealed with no leaks...
