Timing and Duration

Could someone please tell me why or if it’s bad to pull a heavy load with a programmer set on a level higher then the one designed for towing. This is assuming that you have gauges, stay under 1300 degrees and your transmission is designed to take the extra power and torque. Does the added timing and duration cause heat that you can’t monitor with gauges? What harm can it doing to the motor?

I, probably, can't answer all your questions but, will relay my experiences.

I have an '03, HO with a Van Aaken C-3.2 (duration-only) box & I did the "tone-ring mod" which does the same thing as the Rocktek Sensor. It advances the timing, a bit.

I did the tone ring mod first & notices a very slight increase in performance. The increase was VERY slight but, there.

I chose the VA-C3.2 because I did not want to modify the pressure. I understand that a slight amount of pressure is not harmful & beneficial in performance.

My truck has the AFE PG-7 filtration system & a Magnaflow, 4" muffler, also.

I live in AZ where we have a lot of mountain driving. Phoenix is at 1100' elev. & I camp at 9500' elev. All in less than 250 miles. Tow a travel trailer that weighs about 7700 lbs.

My experience is that on the VA's HIGH level (130 HP), with the trailer, going uphill, the temps can get above 1200 degrees. If I switch to the LOWER (65 HP) level, I can't get anywhere near the 1200 degree temp. 65 HP seems to be very safe, to me. However, I would back that up with guages, for sure.

Hope this helps, a bit.

I never go below 100hp and the 100hp is GREAT for towing - 1225 max! Craig

It feeds too much fuel to the engine, thus causing high EGT's. Get twins and you can tow with it, as long as your rail pressure does not go too high.

Thanks for the answers but maybe I didn’t word the question right. I’m wondering if damage can occur without your EGT’s being too high? When they say timing don’t they mean when the injector starts to inject fuel or do they achieve this by advancing the timing of the motor? Dose duration means how long the injector stays open? Can either or both of these settings set very aggressively cause a piston to melt before you see excessive temperatures on you EGT gauge?

^^^^ Yes... It has been said on this forum before... too much timing is a silent killer. That is why one must be careful not to stack two boxes that both use timing. However, if you are only using ONE source for timing, you should be OK.
