Time to replace my TPS

Time to replace my TPS

It's been a year of babying my TPS between using electric contact cleaner every month and using my lockup switch to keep my converter locked....I finally bought a new TPS from ebay

I wound like to try a repair my old TPS and keep it as a spare but it looks like a sealed unit.....can these units be opened up and repaired ??.....it seems like I remember a post about repairing these units but can find it with a search ?? :-[

I don't recall who it was, but I do remember that a member here said they scraped all the glue off and cleaned it up then siliconed it shut with the hi-temp silicone. I don't know if the hi-temp is needed since regular silicone is usually goog for about 400 degrees anyhow.

That was my posting and yes, mine is still working fine for over a year now.
What I did was I took a flat jewelers screwdriver and scraped away at the seal until all the epoxy was gone and then gently pried it with two screwdrivers untill it popped out. What I did notice was that all the lubing I had done in the past by spraying the outside was absolutely useless. I then sprayed it liberally with contact cleaner,(with silicone) worked the actuator about 20 times, wiped it off and re-sealed it with black high heat silicone. The thing I also did was left about 1/8 of a teaspoon of contact cleaner in the unit to diplace any moisture.

yomitch.....thanks for the reply....maybe one of these nites rather then cruising the web I'll try taking that puppy apart since its bad anyways.....is there a way to test it after without putting it on the truck ??

TPS is probably nothing more than a variable resistor...so to test it, just connect an ohmmeter to it and actuate it...the reading should sweep smoothly fom min to max consistently without skips or dead spots. I recently installed a new fuel tank level sending unit and cleaned up the old one...after cleaning, it operated exactly like the new one so I kept it as a spare.

yep, i tried it all.

cleaners/spray - no fix

adjustment - no fix (cause it's nice and smooth when the engine is not running down the road at 60mph)

new brake switch - no fix

new pcm - no fix

6 new tps's - no fix

dealer

???


me re-wiring it. ;D

Good idea if you take one apart to pack the inside with di-electric grease after cleaning. They come packed when new to lube and seal out dirt.

Where is the sensor at? How do you know if its bad, besides it kicking in and out of overdrive? Mine does this all the time, and especially when it is cold. It also kicks into neutral a lot when your taking off, and it can be dangerous; do you all know of any fixes for that? Thanks.

the tps is probably not bad. it is located on the side of the injection pump. it's probably just going in and out of lockup. look at the post above for the fix. DO NOT buy a new tps.
