Tightening Non-towing Mirrors

Hi all,
I was just wondering if the way the towing style mirrors are fixed will also work for the loose glass for the non towing style mirrors. My driver's side mirror shakes quite a bit, it is rather annoying. I don't have towing mirrors, they are power and heated though.

I'm having the same problem...I searched and found that the mirror must be taken off with a flat head or chisel and the housing holding the glass must be tightened (be careful there is a high risk of breaking the mirror). From reading reviews, the aftermarket mirrors also shake...I would replace them but there's not an aftermarket mirror that automatically folds in, except maybe the 3rd gen. mirrors which must be accompanied by the 2nd gen. base$$$

I would like to see more feedback especially if I'm wrong.

Yea, I've seen that for the towing mirrors but never the mention of it for non-towing mirrors. I'm sure if I get out the heat gun it'll help persuade whatever is holding the glass to let go a bit easier, I just don't want to mess it up and end up getting a new one from satan.

Mine is exactly the same as yours Goose, the wind really handles it. I find it nearly impossible to focus on the cars behind me with that mirror because it shakes so badly.

Heat gun is the way to go and go easy and it will come off, if you break it go to the local glass house and around here they charge some 5 to 10 dollars for a new piece. As far as the flip out towing mirrors that also fold in they will go on the 2nd gen with no base change, just make sure you get the extra metal support bracket that goes inside with the mirros, but you will loose your elec and heat, there is a thread that addresses the base change's on the 3rd gen swap to retain the power and heat. I have had fold out towing mirrors on my for years with no shaking or problems. Goodluck,,,Rick

I took it all apart and don't see what can be tightened (it doesn't look at all like the towing mirror inner workings). I'm thinking the best shot is to add some springs behind the plate to stiffen it up so it at least takes more to make it shake.

Well I put it all back together, haven't drove it yet but I don't feel it is really any better. I used a screw to put the loose part in a little of a bind, I also RTVed the backing panel to the cup, then readhered the glass on. I guess I'll live with it for a little while longer then maybe grab some ***** or modify some tow mirrors.
