Guys,

I just finished changing the oil and filter in my truck. The oil change went nice and smooth. I used Rotella 15W40 and on the way home I think I noticed the smell everyone talks about.

I found three zerks: two upper ball joint and one track bar ( I think it is a track bar). The ball joints and a tie rod were replaced last year. So, I go and put the grease in. The driver’s side took two pumps no problem. I don’t even think that began to expand the rubber seal. The passenger side on the second full pump started to ooze grease from the side facing the disc break. Is that normal? I've heard different opinions on the subject. Does anyone know for sure? They will probably have to replaced in another 65K anyways.

I usually pump grease until a little bit leaks out, like you mentioned, then clean off the excess. I'd say this was normal as every vehicle I ever owned did the same.

I thought that was how you are supposed to do it. Pump until you see fresh grease and wipe off the dirty/excess grease and you are done.

Same here JR, even at work same thing. Never had any probs. Only time you have to be careful with the grease is overfilling a PTO(power Take Off) little drippins will sling and find their way to the clutch packs, seizing up the PTO clutches.

Thanks Guys. That is what I thought as well. I read in the Chilton's manual at AutoZone that you are suppose to lube the tie rods until you see grease and the ball joints until tight but not to the point of seeing grease. I just thought that was strange as I have always greased until I see the old grease coming out. I didn't know if something changed or not.

When greasing the ball joints, I jack the tire off the ground to take the weight off the joint, it seems to allow more grease to be filled, without oozing from the boot.

I also use an aluminum complex grease by Schaeffer's that's virtually waterproof, to ensure nothing is washed out of joints that may have a compromise in the sealing boot from repeated servicing. Works great, even in winter. It's pumpable down to -15F, and really sticks.

As soon as you brake the seal on a bearing or boot, its the perfect opportunity for water and dirt to get in.
