Ticking?

OK so I figure this ticking noise is coming from the injector pump?

Runs great and all but it's very annoying at idle, disappears after rpms go up.

Other forum talks about pulling the gear and repositioning it and that gets rid of the noise, but is that necessary?

I'm sure it's the same problem, I'm just lazy I guess because to me getting the belt off looks like a real pain.

Since this site won't let me edit my sig...or do a search its a 2007 5.9L 3500 4wd Mega with 44K.

Very common. these things make lots of different noises. have you used any fuel additives that supply extra lube? B5-B20 biodiesel has quieted mine down to almost nothing. Or you can try some 2 cycle oil.

I have added PS Diesel Clean in the gray bottle and changed the oil recently, but it sounds the same...they other site I'm on was saying it's the pump, that the gear has too much back lash and removing and repositioning the gear will stop it.

But if it's not harmful I don't want to fool with it.

I don't think the gear issue has anything to do with the ticking but it's been awhile since I read about "phasing" the cp3 or whatever they call it. There is only one thing I think any of us can do to keep our cp3's and injectors in good health.

Good clean fuel. If you don't have extra filtration then you aren't doing your engine much good. You cannot have too clean of fuel. I run dual CAT fuel filters. I also buy my fuel at large truck stops that go thru a lot of fuel.

Other than that, I wouldn't mess with your cp3.

With the truck idling cold.

Grab a hold of each injector line close to the injector.

If the line is shaking/rapping with the same consistency as the knock, you found the injector making noise.

The front one (#1) on my engine has been rapping 100k miles. Still starts and runs fine, just makes noise (and slightly less with the 2-stroke oil recommended above).

The other five are smooth.

i performed the pump (retime) or phasing adjustment and my noisy hot idle has gone away, i've beed wrenching on vehicles for 24 yrs and it makes sense. first time i rephased the injector pump i went approx 90 degrees and thye noise was better
then i went approx another 30 degrees and the hot idle engine knock has gone away. tryt it, worked for me. and by the way the belt comes off in about 2 minutes

How is this pump retiming adjustment performed?

Here are the instructions that I used, found from another site. You dont need the barring tool just use a bolt on the crank pulley to turn engine over. This worked GREAT for me, made things alot quieter. No more clank-knocking at idle, seemed to make things quieter throughout RPM range. I was VERY surprised, just a smooth sounding diesel engine. Oh yeah the most difficult thing about this is getting the washer off of the shaft of the CP3. I ended up using a magnet to pull it out. Just dont drop the nut or washer inside front engine cover!! I'm going to do another dodge this weekend after hearing how much of difference it has made. Taking my time it only takes about an hour. Most of that was trying to get that washer out without dropping it.

Parts Used

Part # 3824591 - Cummins Barring Tool

--The rest of these are Autozone part #'s--
Part # 27019 - OEM Harmonic Balancer Puller. This is one of tools you can rent and keep it if you decide to. The guy told me I could cut the bolt and return it, no questions asked I'm not sure if this was just a disgruntled Autozone employee or if this flies everywhere, but I opted to pay the 15 dollars to "rent" the puller. Later I opted to keep it.
Part # 780-445 - M8 - 1.25 x 45mm Hex Head Cap Screws comes with two
Part # 766-012 - Flat washers to fit the above bolts. I used 3/8". They were a little big but they worked. I just doubled them up.

Parts of this job are a lot easier with a buddy. I started by taking the belt off the power steering pump. You don't have to take the belt all the way off, just take it off one pulley.

There is a plastic access cover on the front of the CP3. Insert a 3/8 ratchet and remove it.

Now it's time to modify your harmonic balancer puller. Screw the zinc plated yoke onto the 6 and 3/4" long bolt that came in the kit. This will allow you to "clean" the threads after you cut the bolt.

Cut 3 1/4" off the bolt.

I needed to file the yoke on both sides for the bolts to line up with the holes in the CP3. It won't take much.

Remove the nut and washer that holds the gear on the CP3. Be very careful not to drop these inside. Now, use your M8-1.25 cap screws and washers and mount the puller to the gear inside the CP3 making sure the convex side of the yoke is facing the gear. Tighten the center bolt and the gear should come off. Mine came off easily.

Now it's time to put your barring tool to use. Crawl under your truck and locate the access plate on your bellhousing. It's on the passenger side

Remove the plate and insert the barring tool.

I also marked my dampener pulley with some finger nail polish so I could see how far I had turned the motor.

Now, turn the motor, making sure the pulley you loosened on the CP3 stays put. I went 60 degrees the first time and that's what worked for me.

Put the washer and nut back on the CP3 and torque to 77 ft. lbs. Replace the plastic cover and put the belt back on. Make sure you remove the barring tool and start the truck. If the noise is gone, you're almost done. If not, remove the gear again and rotate the engine more. Once the noise is gone, button everything back up and enjoy. After running my truck for a while, I went ahead and retorqued the nut that holds the gear on the CP3.

This may not be the best way to go about doing this, but it worked for me. Hopefully it saves someone some time looking for tools that work etc.
