"ticking" noise

I have been hearing a slight ticking noise coming from my engin. I never noticed it before. To me it sounds like a dead lifter in a 350chevy. Anyone have a guess as to what it could be?

A "bomb"?

Seriously, though, when was your last valve adjustment? Too loose and it will tick.

Lay under the truck, beneath the drivers seat, while it is runing and see if it is more pronounced could be the fuel return line.

Have a look at the overflow valve on the injection pump. Might be an injector too.

I hear the ticking at cold idle too. I always just thought it was the check valve.

Re:"ticking" noise

My guess is that it is the transfer (lift) pump. See if you can get a mechanic's stethoscope and listen to the pump. Also, listen to the overflow valve on the inside of the injection pump.

If it is the pump, when you replace it, be absolutely certain that you fill it with light oil before you install it, and then again make sure you have diesel running through it before you hook up the outflow line. If you try to prime the pump when it is dry, you will erode the piston and it will start ticking again in a few weeks to months.

If it is the overflow valve, check for a broken checkball spring. That is the spring under the first hex on the assembly.

Re:"ticking" noise

Sorry I don't have an answer for you but I'd also like to know what that ticking noise is. In my case it sounds like it's coming from midway back, driver's side, between cab and box. ?????

Re:"ticking" noise

I chased the phantom ticking noise in mine when I first bought it. Replaced lift pump and overflow valve and it still ticks. I've just decided to live with it. On mine it resonates in the fuel tank. If you put your ear up to the tank or take the fuel cap off and listen it is very pronounced and sounds like a check valve checking. Thats probably what it is.

Re:"ticking" noise

Same with my 98. It ticks right between the cab and box.

You're right BigBadDodge. I've decided it's not worth the worry.
