I am hearing a very faint ticking from my engine when at cruising speed (i.e. small load on the engine). Under acceleration or deceleration, I don't hear it. I only have 57k on my truck with light use. Naturally, my power train warranty just expired - so, if I'm looking at injectors (or anythine else) it will be on my dime. It's pretty subtle - but it's definitely there and I don't think it's normal "diesel" sound. I've used Howes Meaner Cleaner and I thought it helped some. However, after reading the other posts about additives I'm wondering if this is just "placebo effect".

Is there any other fairly common issue besides an injector that might produce this sound (e.g. exhaust leak, valve adjustment, etc.)? If it is an injector on its way out, is there anything preventative that I can do or should I just wait until it fails completely? I have no other symptoms that I've noticed.

In my exerience - if I do a lot of around the local area putting and chugging it seems more noisy than if I take it for a big 5th wheel pull around the mountains. Engine runs better after working it and runs quieter. I put that down to the injectors.

Look at the fuel injector lines... there is a little blue isolator on five of the lines. Tighten that to yeild, put a little locktite on it, see if that helps.

Could be valves, have you adjusted them?

When first started, the CR will purge any air in the rail, causing a ticking noise, but only within a minute of startup.

I'll look at the fuel lines. Do you happen to know the torque specs?

I have not adjusted the valves. Is that something that's normally needed at 57k? I've always had it dealer serviced and they've never suggested it and - trust me - they're always looking for ways to run up the bill.

I believe the CR engines are to have the valves adjusted at either the 100 or 150k mark. Your's shouldn't need it at only 57k but you never know.....I'd play it safe and check them anyways. Only takes a few minutes. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it's .010 for intake and .020 for exhaust.

These engines need to be worked on occasion as the previous poster said. I used to work the crap out of mine 6 days a week hotshotting across the country and let me tell ya...it definitely ran better back in those days as opposed to just putting around town nowadays.
