tick tick tick

Well I just got off the phone with the front end shop and apparently the ticking sound I've been hearing is unrelated to the hit I took on the front wheel. They say its not in the front end =\

It varies with rpms and remains unchanged in or out of gear. Can you guys give me some tips on stuff to look at to help dteremine what this is?

Not sure on the 24V, but on the 12V like mine ticking can mean the lift pump or the overflow valve. Have even heard the fuel filter needs changed. Might give you some place to start.

useless bit of info here. My fifth wheel hitch, when in the truck with no load, get this. The chain that tethers the safety pin to the hitch, would sway merrily to and fro ( because you don't get to say that enough ) and cause a light ticking noise when contacting the hitch. funny thing is, it also varied with wheel speed. That one almost made me look for my mind again. ( It was lost a while back ). However, I have also had wheel bearings tick like this, varies with wheel speed, but does not do it unladen. another thing to look at is your diff breather hoses. I had a front one flopping around, once again, the ticking. Also, a small stone embedded in a tread block on one of the tires, tick tick tick. ugh
And finally, the one that kicked my butt for months. tick tick tick tick tick, varied with wheel / vehicle speed, and the winner was.... The freakin block heater cord, dangling inside the bumper when not in use, swaying in the breeze and ticking against the rad support.
To say that I have a love affair going on with ticks.... or things that tick anyway, would not be off the mark. I frequently get to diagnose this stuff on customer vehicles as well.
Good luck with your tick, hope you get the bugs worked out.

I'm pretty sure that its in the drivetrain/ brakes in the rear. I get the truck back tommorrow so I'll see what I can find. I'm thinking I can just jack up each wheel and spin it to find the noise.

FWIW I have done some pretty hard launches recently. U joints a possibility?

The tick tick tick is now a creaking sound. The shaft has a nice clean spot on it so maybe it hit the underside of the truck? The shaft is going to a driveshaft shop this week for spicer u joints and a shaft balance.

Ya'll think I need ladder bars or could a failing u joint allow enough play for the shaft damage I'm seeing?

I don't know how much this relates to any thing but when I installed a new lift pump I had a small air leak in the line and it make the ticking sound and once the lines were tightened up it went away. I also want to say it made a ticking sound when the OEM pump took the dirt nap but I cant recall. I have also noticed a small tickin when the fuel cap dont get tight and its drawin in air.

P.S. I realize the above has been stated already but I am just throwing out my findings on what my ticking turned out to be

P.S.S. Also when my ujoints went out the only time they made a noise was taking off from a dead stock it sounded more like a metal on metal slapping
