Thought a 12valve was reliable
my brother went to El paso TX these weeks, so of course now he took the shortie 96 12 valve
anyway, he has problems with it!
He parked it outside the Hotel, and had it idling, when he came back it was not running, then he had a very hard time getting it to run again, it cranked but didnt start. finally had it running
next morning it didnt start again. afer lots of starting, loosining inj lines and priming, it finally started again.
and all of a sudden on the highway it looses power, then it comes back again!
what might be the deal?
Are we just so unlucky to always have problems?. we used to go with chevy's 350's to usa, and have had lots of prblems on the road with them. now that we changed to dodge cummins, we seem to not have luck making long trips

I would change the fuel filter. He might of got a bad batch of diesel. I know if the filter gets clogged up it can make it run really bad. This would be the cheapest and easiest thing to try first. I would give this a try and see if it helps any.

Possible Causes
all of the above, Fuel filter or bad fuel have happened to me. The fuel solenoid deal as well. A few inches from the solenoid, the wire to it rubbed through on the engine lifting bracket. I was able to hot wire it and got home. This when it finally quit completely after weeks of cussing and intermittent losses of power.
Warning, if you have switched to BIO, expect to replace a fuel filter or 2! Bio has excellent solvent characteristics and will clean the system, right into the filter.

that would be my suggestion
rubber lines in the back of the truck, IE fuel and return lines, have they been changed out? my guess would be that u have a severe air leak somewhere if the OFV has been changed out and is good
I guess u can try this
Fuel Filter
OFV
Fuel Pressure readings
Rubber Return lines
Then last but not least the Lift Pump (any ticking comin out of it)
Hope this helps

remember that discussion about "overpaying" for a truck that's been well maintained vs. paying $4-5k for a truck with questionable maintanence records?
seriously though, definately sounds like water or air in the fuel system

haha, this one was only $3,500! but its a great truck! runs very strong! and smooth! and get GREAT fuel mileage!!! just over 20 mpg
There might be some problems with the fuel stuff, since we modded it "some" On another thread: "shortening my 96 clubcab" i described, how the guy who shortened it, for us, cut the fuel lines, and took a part out, and put them together again. might have a leak there.
Then he put a used (shorter) fuel tank from the junkyard under it... ("might" have been dirty). yeah we had to replace and clean filter before he left to Usa!
well just tonight he called, he arrived in las vegas, after saying that he hung up, must have had worked again.
oh yeah as far as the fuel filter, he cleaned the pre filter screen, and it had been very dirty! but still had the problem after that.
thanks. And no i wasnt mad at the 12 valve! and yes, i knew its not a bad IP
thanks for all the help guys!

wait, does it still shut off or not? I had a problem with the relay to the shutoff solenoid before, but that wouldn't cause it to shut off. Before I replaced the relay I had to put the key in and turn it to the on position then open the hood and manually push the solenoid up every start (it's not hard to do, but it's a hassle). In the solenoid there's two different magnets. One "sucks" the rod up and one holds it there (to preserve energy and the coil). For me, the one that holds (actually the wire connection to it) it never failed. I don't know if it would. The problem with yours shutting off probably has nothing to do with the solenoid.
I also had the fuel line problem, and it was at about the same time. The fuel line goes from soft to hard (through the frame on the bottom) then to soft again. My hard line had holes in it -- at least, after the dealer looked at it. I never leaked fuel onto the ground before the dealer tried to screw me. The dealer is retarded. Anyway, that caused a big problem trying to start it, but after started it ran fine, in my case.

I like the idea of making a fitting out of the fuel filler cap , put a shrader valve in it , thin put about 2-3 lbs of air pressure in the tank , that will force fuel out of any leaks in the lines & hoses to pump , were there is only a vacume when the trucks running and its hard to fine a leak , after the pump you have pressure so that should be easyer with the truck running .
