Just riped third gear out of my NV 4500 again. The first was on my original trans which had just over 100,000 on it, so I put it down to age. This last time it did it after 20,000. The trans was "new" from the dealer (I had a buddy that worked there so the price wasn't much more then a rebuilt).

Now that the back ground is done I'd like to get some opinions on where to go next. I'm kind of at my wit's end. I have no money to fix it (typical when something major goes wrong) but since I have to fix it I need to do it better. Is a 6 speed the answer, upgrading to the bigger shaft in the 4500? What about a non conventional swap like a clark or something out of a medium duty truck? I'm going to be saving my pennies for the next few months and I want to make sure I put it somewere it will last. I'm not going to be able to get another truck for a looooooooooong time so what ever I do is going to have to last more then 20,000 miles. I'm even considering putting the truck back to stock (although that won't be cheap either).

Well I got the trans out last night. Looks as though the only damage is third so I'll be ordering some parts and rebuilding it. I need to get it going.

Any suggestions for a stronger upgrade?
