I would pull the injectors out first. My brothers truck sounded like a rod knock & turned out to be bad injectors. Throw another set of sticks in & see if it goes away.

Be sure to check the flywheel and torque converter bolts if it's an auto.

Check the valve lash clearances. When I did my head gasket, I went and did my second retorque and did the valve lash setting in a rush. I must have not tightened down one of the locknuts enough. Well, the adjuster bolt backed its way out and it started as a slight knock, by the time I got home it sounded like a gun firing. Scared the poop out of me.

Turns out the pusnrod came out of its slot on the lifter and was just enough to make it sound like a knock.
Just a suggestion,, hope thats what it is.

My brother was freaking out when his truck did it, sounded just like a rod knock. I said "Brian, I wasn't hammering on your truck, just driving normal & Bam!!!" It turned out to be 6 bad injectors & one had went really bad. I would swap them & adjust the valves. Hopefully it wasn't a valve seat letting go.

I agree, it's pretty easy to pull the inspection cover and look, but look closely. On my first gen, the first time it sounded like the whole top end had gotten trashed but it would still pull. The second time it sounded the same but it quit pulling. The second time the center of the flex plate broke out and was very hard to see.

Sounds like you might not have gotten a pushrod seated just right, and it seated itself. If its out on one (cool cyl) I would pull that pushrod and check it for straightness.

When mine started hammering, it was a melted piston.

No worries, it was only $10,858.00 to fix it.
