Thermostat housing leaks

It seems to be the lift plate is not flat and leaks.
Can I just pull the lift plate and have that work o.k.?
Don't want to use gasket in a tube.
Local shop wants $200 to fix and flush.

Mine thermostat housing would leak on my 00. I got tired of fooling with it & slapped on some RTV making (reasonably) sure that it didn't cover the tstat bleed holes. The leak may be caused by crushed gasket but I'm not buying a $70 thermostat for a 50 cent gasket.
