How to I tell which transmission?

Hi all,
I have a 2003 Ram 3500 Cummins SLT Heavy Duty, AT, quad cab short bed, 3.73 rearend, manufactured 08/2002 in case any of this matters. I know there are several different auto transmissions offered with this truck, (47-something, 48-something?) How do I tell which trans I have? I tried looking for a label during my last oil change, but didn't see anything. That being said, I didn't know where to look either.

^ Yup ..... the output on the "new" HO engine (305hp) included the switch to the 48RE.

carefull... if it was built in the date period he wrote there Aug 2002, it could be a 47RE.
There should be a metal tag or stamping on the drivers side near the shifter mechanisism which could tell for sure. Get the degreaser and a rag and see. If it's gone, short of opening it up you're screwed.

Only 3rd gen SOs could have come with 47re's. All HO auto trucks had the 48re until the 68RE came out. Some of the 03-04 SOs came with 48re's too....
The OP has not told us if he has an SO or an HO truck.
BTW, my glove box gives me both codes for the different transmissions and also a third trans code. It's pretty stupid.....

And I had an 03 SO 3500 that had the 47re. It also had the bigger front axle....

Its a 47RE, the 48RE did not go into production until 01-2003 for SO or HO.
