Tech article: Engine driven air compressor install

Okay gents, as promised here is the install .....

Extreme Outback EDC

This is basically a Sanden SD 509 A/C compressor modified for use as a compressor. I should have taken a picture of it prior to the install but I was excited and forgot.

It's a PITA to install, and part of it called for "slightly bending" the power steering lines which I decided would be a bad thing. I ended up taking it to my dealer to finish the install and have custom made power steering lines made to eliminate the flexing and running them over the top of the battery, which you'll see on the next picture:

This is what it looked like after the install was completed:

Now the details ....

This thing pumps massive amounts of air. I can fill a 5 gallon tank from 0 to 150 psi in roughly 50 seconds at 2000 RPM, and at idle it takes about 80 seconds. My pressure switch is a 175psi, so the fill times are a bit more than what I tested ...... which ended up being 60 seconds and 90 seconds respectively.

I'll have one more picture coming of the new power steering lines, and if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

I need to get another video done (I'll have my oldest do that) but there is a TON more air when I blow the horns now.

I can get a solid 5 seconds of honk and still have around 70 pounds in the tank, which make the refill about 30 seconds to do.

The only other issue I had was leader hose length .... which I fixed by adding some Goodyear brand hose for garage use that was oil and high temp rated. Picked that up from D&B (farm supply store) for about $40 and got a 50 foot roll.

I've got two ....

The current horn is a Nathan AirChime K3LA and is mounted to my truck right now:

I also have a Nathan AirChime K5LL (Canadian tuned Amtrak horn) that I need to finish stripping and then paint. I decided on the same blue my truck is, but no new pics of it.

K5LL torn apart for stripping:

Prior to my decision to strip and repaint:

How much added noise and vibration does that engine compressor make, I know that equipment(tractors) that extra noise from the compressor is a big deal as they use so little air they are always dumping and its kinda loud.

It's similar to turning on the A/C .... same little shudder when it starts, there is a slight noise and no vibration while it runs, and you can't tell when it turns off just like the A/C.

Brad,

HornBlasters has a forum going for supporting the products they sell, and I got both of mine from guys selling their horns in their classified section.

Both of my horns are actually train horns, so they are used and that means you're looking at spending about 30% to 40% of the new price. I spent roughly $400 per set, versus $950 for a K3 or $1500 for a K5.

The new horns from Nathan have a small restrictor built into them so they are not as loud as the real deal, but that can be easily fixed. The only spare parts you need for these horns are the diaphragm and cushion kit (one kit per horn, or "bell") so depending on which set you have, you're looking at either 3 kits or 5 kits (K3 or K5, respectively) when it's time to do maintenance, which isn't very often. You can get years of honking after replacing the diaphragm and cushions.

Sound-wise, the K3LA is 156db and the K5LL is 154db but the K5LL has a deeper tone due to how it's tuned.
