Talk me out of selling my truck!

I have an '07 megacab laramie six speed manual CTD in mineral grey that I love but no longer really need because I sold my travel trailer. I owe about what I would get if I sold it. I have put an edge on it, two inch level kit, 285 BFG's, a spray in bedliner, air bags, and a few other odds and ends but it is not that customized yet.

My wife says I should keep it because I spent 8 months looking for it on dealer's inventories and got the exact truck I wanted. My thought is that I have no real use for it, other than to fill a want rather than a need.

What do you think?

Highly Encouraged!

If you can get out of it with NO loss, or very little, I would do it... QUICK. I guess it all depends if you plan to put very many miles on it. Meaning, out-of-warrany...look out, and I've done most of the work myself.

Souns like a nice truck, and with the mods done, it will give the buyer instant gratification. Should sell.

In the last year n' half, I've spent enough to pay for 1/2 of a new truck ...I'm serious.

Just think of it as a nice, big, comfortable sedan that's ready to do anything you can throw at it.

No one knows your financial situation but you. That would be the only thing that I could see that would motivate me to sell my truck at this point. Even then, it would be a hard pill to swallow. What will you drive next? A Festiva??

If your going to replace it with another truck, 1/2 ton, their is no way, if it is just going to sit in the garage maybe, I just enjoy the feel of mine... turbo, exhaust noise, etc

Wink

If you can afford to keep it....I`d keep it.

I did the same thing as you , bought the truck I wanted , to tow our travel trailer , and sold the TT. Everyone thought I`d get rid of the truck seeing how I no longer had any real USE for it....but as you can see , I kept it...and glad I did.

Keep the truck. I thought about selling mine when things got alittle rough financially and had no real use for it anymore but its amazing how much the truck gets used just around the house. I mean, a trip to lowes to pick up lumber or something. Much easier to just hop in the truck instead of calling around, asking my buddies if i could borrow a truck for an afternoon.

I keep mine because I own some land and tractors etc. I bought it because I was way over working my half ton. Since then I haven't pulled much with this one.

I think I'm keeping this one for the long haul though. Can't think of another truck besides maybe a Z71 I'd want other than this one. Maintenance is an SOB with 4x4 though. About to go to a free spin kit and good balljoints and not have to worry with my front end as much.

I doubt that you would have any problems selling your truck, it is the last of the 5.9's produced and many people would take interest in buying it. I myself am considering replacing another one of my older trucks and I would be looking for another 5.9 6-speed to add to my garage. I recently paid off my 2006. So, from the selling standpoint, you DO have a gem to sell.

I think your wife is right. You did spend a lot of time getting the exact truck you desired. While you have sold your TT it could be possible that another TT could be in your future or the need for a truck in general might be the better way of looking at it. I guess you have to look at how you have used your truck so far - as in, how many miles are on it towing and how many miles are driving empty. If your driving empty miles far exceed your towing miles, then you would just be continuing the behavior you have been practicing, not really any kind of a change except not pulling a TT for a few miles as compared to your other use.

With all the financial uncertainty that seems to abound economically in the US, I would probably choose to keep the truck. It might be much more difficult to finance anything in the near future as credit is tightening up big time.

I know I enjoy driving my truck much more that any truck I have owned in the past. It is the best of both worlds when it comes to having room for people and hauling stuff. Serves a dual purpose rather than having multiple vehicles to do different things.

Bottom line, it how you see your future, needs that may appear vrs needs now, and of course then there is the payment aspect and how that impacts you.

It's like the above mentioned, what you want, your finacial situation (I mean lets face it if we were all millionares we'd have everything)

I bought my truck back in 2005, knowing a few things.
1. Kids are in the future
2. I keep vehicles for at least 10-15 years
3. It would be paid off fast (3 years)
4. I have a 20 foot enclosed trailer
5. Truck would be used for haulding, towing, and long trips (vacations with gear)

So that's why I bought it. I could have went with a 1500, or even a gasser, but the diesel is more efficient (it was less than gas back then). I don't use it as a daily driver, just for working.

Now if I didn't need a pick up truck, or to tow, or to haul, i would have a car in a second. Go buy that SR8 whatever challenger, and maybe even a street bike for the price I paid for the truck. The tough part is if you really don't use it for anything other than enjoyment (nothing wrong with that) would something else make you as happy? I know I'd have a blast in a 6 speed with 450 horse power, yes power is power, but I know a car with that power will def. make me smile.

It's all what you need. If you NEED the truck keep it. If you WANT the truck then it's in your court as to sell/buy. The good news is that most don't want the new trucks with all the stuff, so you could get a good price. I fyou keep it, pay it off, it's yours, no payments, but if you wont' keep it for more than a few years, then maybe it won't pay for itself?

I know people that buy new every 2 years no matter what, so for them, sell it, me I keep it cause I know it works.

It's all what you want. People on here can say sell (cause they want to buy ) and say keep it cause they know the pride of ownership of the cummins (and dodge)

Lots of good responses. I guess it boils down to whether your financial situation and future plans will support having an expensive truck or not.
Like others said, if you're planning on selling it in favor of a 1/2 ton, it's probably better to keep what you have. (It's your $ though)
If you ned a 30mpg commuter that doesn't take a grocery cart of oil to do an oil change on, then sell it.
Around here, it loos like the diesel truck market has bottomed out a while back and prices are going up......slightly.
You got a good truck if you plan on keeping it. I know I'd never sell mine unless $$ dictated (or someone gave me a new one for free).

I think you have all made great arguments. I don't have a financial need to sell it, so keeping it may be the way to go. I think I will find a cheap beater car to commute in since I have virtually no traffic to contend with.

Thanks

What I left out about my situation is that I have a Turbocharged Miata for my running around pleasures. It's an older model, low mileage, just my FUN car, cheap to insure, gets 30+mpg's. I also have Jeep Wrangler, use it mostly in the winter but do drive it when I need room for more than the two seater, it gets 21-22 mpgs, closer to what the truck gets. It's all about perspective, finances, and your needs. When I am seeking the ultimate comfort zone I drive the truck.

When I shopped for my truck, I knew what I wanted, and I knew of the possibility that it wouldn't get worked that hard for what it is. I took my time finding the right truck, and now that I have it, its been paid off, modded, and its been worked alot more than I intended out of it. You never know how much your Cummins can help you in the long road til you keep it and see. I have 115,000 miles and a sense of comfort knowing I've never had a Check Engine Light bother me yet, and I grow more attached to it everyday.

As you can see I am a man that loves his truck. If you don't really feel this way (or more rather see it as a burden to have your truck), then get rid of it, someone will want it more than you. But I think you have a keeper there considering how long you searched for it.
