Is it a factory tach?
If so,there should be a 3 wire plug (black plastic) on the left side of the steering column between the column and the headlight switch, just hanging there in mid air.
It may help to take off the fuse block panel under the column to find the plug in.

Hope that helps.

if its not a factory tach, i dont think you are going to get it to work unless you buy an adapter, i have a dakota digital tach adapter in my 75 to run my autometer gauge, works very well, about $100 on ebay

Actually it's a 4 wire plug...
+12
Ground
Panel Light
Signal

I'd suspect the 4 wires hanging loose...
IF it is, then :
With the key OFF the black should be ground;
With the key ON the red should be +12;
IF these are what is listed above then with the key OFF turn on your park lights and one of the white wires should be hot - that's your light.
The remaining white wire will be the tach signal from the PCM.

Hope this helps get your tach working.
