Like I said the tach quit about an hour ago and I got to reading on here and read that the crank sensor will cause that and the ac to quit,went and checked a/c dont work now...so am I looking in the right dirrection with the crank sensor?

Not sure about hurting anything but mine was the ess a little while ago. make sure its not just out of adjusment before you buy a new one.

Don't know about the 98's, but when the ESS went out on my 95, I had no alt charging either.

yeah i checked the adjustment it was a no go, and yeah i forgot to add that i was not charging,i thought at first it was just the gauge but turns out it aint charging,soo i guess ther the same.

Another thing to check is the connection to the sensor, sometimes corrosion, sometimes oil ( if you have a crusty engine like mine ) can short across it, might try disconnecting and cleaning with contact cleaner ( or brake clean if you are frugal ).
