Anyone running synthetic engine oil in this cold weather.. its been about 0 degrees with a wind chill of -10F. 15w40 has been taking a little time to build pressure. I didn't know about maybe a 5w40 synthetic would be better.

I am not an oil Guru, but I would definitely run the very oil you mentioned if I lived where it was those temps. I think you are right, 5-40 would be an excellent choice. Maybe those DTR Dudes in Alaska will chime in, they ought to know all about what is best for those temps and far below. Probably could just run it year round without problems. A couple worth mention that won't break the bank are Schaeffers or Rotella in 5-40.

I'm runnin 5w-30 amsoil and the oil pressure gauge doesn't seem to really come up much faster than my dads runnin 15w-40. It does crank over much better with the sythetic. Have you ever tried to pour regular 15w-40 when its zero out? It ain't pretty. The synthetic pours much better. I bet you would be happier with running a lighter weight synthetic.

take a qrt. of dino oil and qrt. of sytn. in your fezzer overnight to convince yourself

I use Mobil Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40. I have very little crankcase bottle vapors due to my switch. I am very happy with this oil too because consumption is zilch.

ROTELLA T 5W-40 SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL + 1 LUCAS SYNTHETIC . The truck sat for three weeks fired up fine.Well worth the extra money.I've used it for three winters.

Does 15-40 make anyone elses truck idle slow when cold and rise as engine warms up? I had synthetic delvac until 2 mos ago, and it was as smooth as butter at cold start-up.

5-40 rotella. 19 bucks a gallon at wally world. topped off the p.o.s the other day at 15 below, flows pretty decent. stinks something wierd though.

I've used Castrol Syntec 5W50 year round for several years now, ... consumption negligible as mentioned above, and cold starts not a problem. It's about $100 with the filter per change, but nothing's too good for my old reliable work-horse

I had trouble starting my old mercedes diesel in -10 and lower weather. Would NOT crank over fast enough for me. Put in a new battery and nothing better. Changed the oil from 15W40 - 5W40 and it turned MUCH faster and started in the same weather without being plugged in.

That was the most convincing side by side evidence I've seen. I was very suprised at how much it helped.

I'm with ppiggppenn,it cost $100-110 here for the filter and oil but I won't run regular oil any more. I personally run either Shell Rotalla T or Chevron Delo400 in 5W40 synthetic.
I've swapped the oil in the transmission to synthetic as well.It seems to shift a LOT better when it's -43c.
