Sweet/musty smell coming from vents... bad heater core?

I've started noticing a sweet/musty smell coming from my defroster vents... I have a vacuum leak and my vents are stuck on the defroster position anyway. It seems to show up periodically, sometimes I'll smell it and other times I won't.

I can smell it no matter if the fan position is on A/C or normal blower mode, as well as if the heat/cool selector is in either position. The smell is stronger if I have the fan at a higher speed.

Can't smell any coolant in the engine compartment or outside the truck, haven't spotted any coolant leaks, and no white smoke from the exhaust that would suggest a bad head gasket.

However, I haven't seen the condensation building up on the window like some have... but the temperatures have been around the 30s here for a while now, so would that only show up if it was warm outside?

Sound like a bad heater core to yall? I don't look forward to this job

Sounds like the a/c drain is stopped up and mildewing. Look on the outside firewall towards the bottom and see if thats it.

Ok, I'll check on that. It definitely has a sweet smell as well to it, kind of like coolant, like taking a real deep breath of cold air through your nose... if that makes sense

def your heater core, i had that happen to me, took a while to replace because you basically have to rip the dash out but its easy work. the condensation will start before to long, let me know if you have any questions although its been several years since i replaces the core so i dont remember much

If you have to replace the heater core, go ahead and do the evap core. it'll cost a little more but will save you in the long run.

That sweet smell is probably antifreeze.
