Swapping p pumps

This weekend I will be swapping my 160 for a 215 pump. Is there anything special I need to know or does anyone have a website with instructions. I know I will need to retime it but is there anything else special. Corey

i have done it several times.

-Just take off the air horn,
-Then the injection lines -as a set of 6, leave em together.
-Remove the complete throttle assembley (3 bolts, 10mm)
-Remove the overflow valve, be careful with the washers.
-Remove the fuel feeding line, on the fuel filter, and on the pump (left side -theres a banjo bolt, be careful with the 2washers.)
-Remove the AFC line, going to the cold air manifold.
-Remove or just unplug the shut off solenoid.
You can remove a 8mm screw on the very bottom on the back right side of the pump, which holds the overflow line, so the line will stay there, on the rubber hose, or you can remove the line too, as you wish.
-There are two 10mm bolts holding the pump down to a bracket. and one holds the overflow line as well, they go parallely down with tha pump, remove them.
-Ok, now pull the gear from the front pump shaft, like if youd do timing.
-Now you remove the 4 nuts, holding the pump to the front gear plate. (15mm)
Now you pull the pump back, needs some good pulling, cuz the big rubber seal ring comes out hard some times.

to put the 215 on, put both on TDC, the engine and the pump,
and then do the steps above, going backwards. then time it.

Dont install a number 4 or 5 or 6 plate full forward, unless you adjust the governor arm, cuz it will ride under the plate. The 215 pump is different in there then the 160.

PS we had to readjust the shut off solenoid changin from 1 pump to another, cuz the solenoid came up completly, but the arm on the pump didnt, wich gave us not complete fuel at WOT.
i may have forgotten something, im here for any questions.

good luck. dont forget to tighten anything up.

When we did put on a 215, we thought it was worth it, lots more power. with the 370-s already in.
we blew our turbo in the 1st quarter mile we punched it, so that it was the perfect time for the HTB2

Is a 215 pump worth it going from a 180 pump? Any estimate on HP gain with my setup?

Talking

I have the stock 180 pump and I'll be going to a 215 pump in the next few weeks. When I did this with my last truck, I noticed about 50 more horses and noticeably better performance off the line. I believe the latter was due to the variable timing of the 215 pump and it made the truck much nicer to drive in the city.

The 215 pump has variable timing? I didn't know that! I thought the Inline pumps (at least the P7100 pumps) had fixed timing.

You noticed 50HP as in seat of the pants, or you saw it on the dyno?

The timing is still fixed in the 215 pump but the gooves in the plunger and barrel assembly have an effent on the fluid flow as RPMs change.

_______

TSTs website says a 215 pump (with the 215 injectors) is 110hp over the 180 pump with a #10 plate? I will let you know soon

Haha that was extremely odd but I just realized that my post number when I started this thread was 215 what a cowinky dink.

Thanx for all the info but I think my timing kit hook up might be out of town this weekend but hopefully not. What i am doin is takin a pump off a truck that is gettin sold at the auction so I have to have the pump off of it this weekend. an I have a spare 160 pump in the shop that im going to put on the truck. So if I take it off at TDC and put the other pump on with it pinned then timeing should remain the same correct?

Ok got the pumps switched out when I time it do I time it according to the 160 lift chart or the 215 chart? Because on the dually that it the 215 came off of we put my 160 back on it and I timed it to the 160 chart and I cant get the truck to start. Its got fuel at all injectors but wont start any ideas?

But yea I wasnt it sure if I had tdc at the right revolution or not. Can you explain how it could be 180 out im havin a big ol brain fart right now

TDC pin is always at the right revolution. the engine turns 2 times, when the tdc hole passes 1 time,

did you put the injection pump on TDC as well?

having both on tdc, and put it together, and fuel at the injectors, should definitly start the truck. the piuns can be off a bit, but thats when you time it with the timing tools.

When you put it a TDC #1 both the intake and exhaust rockers on 1 should be relaxed with no spring pressure on them if your 180 out they will be tight. Yes you want to use the 215s lift for timming 5.5-5.6MM will give you 15.5-16 degrees
