Surveilence System?

Need some help guys...

Our store was broken into Sunday night...didn't get much, just a digital camera and a few hundred bucks. Anyway, Dad want's to put up some video cameras. Whats a good system to look at? A couple camera's will be outside, and a couple more will need to be able to see across an 80' shop. We are also going to put one over our cash drawer as we seem to be losing about $50 a week from it.

Any input is appreciated. I'm fairly good with techy stuff, but up 'til now have not had any need for video cameras, so I'm a bit in the dark.

Thanks,
Chris

I would suggest getting a system tied into your computer system so you can monitor it from home. If you have employees it works out great. You can sit at your home computer and watch what's going on. You can also record everything and burn it to CD or DVD.

Also one that records digitally as opposed to slo-mo VHS tape.

After a couple passes on the VHS, you can't see anything let alone get any facial features.

Well, I don't know, but Jim Lane is the patron saint of home security.

Here is a fairly inexpensive but good quality solution. Good luck.

For a web based cam I like this one better. It has pan and tilt.

The biggest complaint about survelance systems from police depatments is they lack the quality to hold up in court. IMHO If you are going to do it, do it right and the benefit will repay the cost. Check with your insurance agent and police department to see what they recommend. Or you could get a hungry junkyard dog.

A Remington 870 Slug gun is the best security...especially with me at the trigger. Problem is, I can't see the mile to the store in the dark!

Thanks for the suggestions, and keep 'em coming!!

A couple of pits turned loose at night would be amusing. Of course you would have to have the vidoe for sure then to show us fine folks at DTR.

I had 3 pits until I gave one to my brother. I still have 2. I can vouch for their effectiveness. They are sweethearts but the thugs don't know that.

Chris, if you are going to be at the Dyno Day next weekend, I will bring some stuff to show you. I have some cams and some supplier catalogs you might be interested in. If you want to talk to be about it before then, give me a call... i think you still have my cell number...

There are a lot of diferent ways to go when it comes to cameras. I sell and install CCTV systems. If you are interested in a quality system, be prepared to drop a little coin. A good DVR,four cameras will run you between 3 & 5k depending on how labor intensive the installation is. The systems we install are not built into youre PC. It is an independent unit. The main problem with PC units is that you are prone to viruses. Our systems allow you to view what is going on in your store real time. You can be in China, hop on line and see whats going on in your business. You can set your system to be on motion only, meaning the camera will only start to record if someone or something moves past it. If you put a camera in an area that is restricted to the public or employees, when it is tripped we can program the system to notify you via email, pager, cell etc. limitless options. One other bonus to going through a proffesional CCTV installation company, is most of them, like us will set you up on a service contract. We do quarterly inspections and in the event of a situation where there was a crime we come to the site and burn a copy of the events for the police, fire, Ins, and the end user. We can do this from the site or even from a remote location. I would urge you to stay away from the Costco, Radio shack systems, wireless, web systems. If you have any questions, PM me, I could refer you to a qualified company in your neck of the woods.
