View Full Version : Super HX40 vs. DAP S300 (62/65/12)

I am toying with the idea of switching turbos, mainly because the Super HX40 would come with a 16 cm housing. Also trying to get back to a first gen style of turbo, as I am running an S362 that has the 3rd gen style of compressor housing. Do you think the performance would be comparable on these turbos?
PM me if you don't know what DAP means. Just trying to stay within the rules.

Why do you want to get away from the 3rd gen style?

I assume he wants away from the 12cm he has. ,, Jon, I think the super 40 will not flow as much air as your 62mm. As far as my brain goes the super 40 flows a little more then the 57mm model S300, then next above the 40 is your 62 S300 based rig.

I think a first gen style compresssor would be a better fit. I'd also like to go back to a stock first gen drain tube. You should see the monstrosity that I have now.
Are the Super 40 specs 60/65/16?

Yes.

Per Holset, the Super 40 flows "over 850 cfm", how much more, I don't know.
Per BD, the S300 57mm extended tip compressor wheel flows 870 cfm.
I would think the 62mm extended tip would flow quite a bit more than the Super 40, but is yours extended tip or not? I can't find a flow rate for that wheel. I've read that the non-ET wheels flow about 20% less than the ET ones.

I agree on the 57mm 300 model cfm's. I spoke on the phone to Curt Henderson who is the tech at borge warner and he told me 870 cfm's. I had read somewhere though that the super hx 40 flowed more then the baby s300. Not sure on that.

Here is a compressor map if that will help any.

You should get rid of that S362 immediately. It's ruining your truck. I'll bite the bullet and take it off your hands, though.[laugh]
Seriously, though, what exactly do you not like about it (besides the drain tube)? Is it purely aesthetic? I'm assuming your DAP has a full-polished 3rd gen housing?
Looks like you will be giving up a little air to make the swap. Will a 7 blade 40 cool your injectors?

I guess the 12 cm housing is killing it for me. My truck has a few things killing the top end right now, and I think this is one of them.
I guess it is a consensus that a Super HX40 would be a step down in the air department.

Time to hang an S400 under it.[laugh]

Would the 12 cm housing still be an issue for twins?

??
Tacoclaw over on 1stgen.org plans on using the same turbo you have in a twin setup. He has a steedspeed exhaust manifold and an external gate though. Based off the fact that I've seen people run hx35s and he351s for secondaries, I'd think you would be fine. Neither one of them flow as well on the exhaust side as an s300. You've got a lot better internal wastegate than they do.

No, that's what I have on my 62/71 in my twin set.

If I could do the piping I would be all over twins, unfortunately I don't have the skills or the patience.

If you want to spend the money there are at least a couple companies that make kits for the first gens.

Nope, I don't want a kit. I want to find someone that can fabricate it for me for a fraction of the price.

That 65mm turbine isn't the best for exhaust flow. I have never ran a super 40, but I would love too. The 10 blade turbine is an improvement over the standard, and its an all around great turbo which is usually passed up for a Borg unit.

Both turbos in question have 65mm turbines.
