Sucky fuel press

Arrright! I just bought the Carter P4600HP last week and installed it at the same time that I put my Banjo bolts & AutoMeter electronic fuel press guage in. Low and behold the guage lasted about 1 minute. It died when I was bumping the starter priming the fuel system. The highest I saw it get was about 6 psi. and then went to 0psi. Checked it with manual guage and was showing good pressure. Pressure would dip down to about 10psi while reving the motor in neutral. So I contacted Summit and they sent me a whole new guage setup. Put it in last night and found that it was not the sender, but the guage itself. Got that going and took it for a spin. I was able to suck the pressure down to 3 psi at WOT. And it was setting at about 10psi in 5th gear at 2000rpm no load. Sometimes the needle jumps around erratically 1 or 2 psi while crusing at this speed. Seems like the pressure is fluctuating rapidly or the guage is a P.O.S. The carter by itself is pushing about 6 - 7 psi at idle. And when the stock pump is added it pushes on up past the 15psi mark on my guage. The fuel filter has less that 500 miles on it. Is anyone else with the Carter pump having good pressures? Could the stock pump be causing a flow restriction? Should I have gotten the Holly blue pump?

I'd go with either a Holley Blue by itself, a Holley Red used as a pusher to feed your current carter, a FASS system, or a PE system.

Yeah! Think that's what I'm going to do. RIGHT after I yank that AutoMeter electric P.O.S. fuel press guage out and send it back to Summit. Number 2 died on my just now after I posted the first time. I'm going with a manual guage. Any one know what type of connection in on the back of the AutoMeter Pro-Comp Ultra-Lite 0 - 100psi fues press guage?? I've got some 1/16" Stainless tubing that I'm going to run up to the pillar mount. I need to get it to a 1/8"NPT female connection for the tubing fitting.

You'd be better off going with an ISSPRO 0-30 psi mechanical FP gauge. Talk to Merrick (the link to his website is in my sig) and he'll hook you up. I had a dakota digital FP gauge and after 3 senders, I said screw it and went to mechanical. Been running mechanical for about a week now and not a single leak or anything. It's wonderful.

What ever mechanical gauge you use toss the isolator if it comes with it, all they do is cause is trouble.
Most automotive gauges have 1/8'' pipe thread on the back.

Don't think running metal tubing for the entire run is a good idea, the engine moves and vibrates too much. I've known a couple guys who have had the metal tubing crack due to this. Use hose for at least the part of the run close to engine.
I personally use 1/8'' nylon tubing like comes with boost gauges slipped though a protective outer sheath of 1/4'' hose. Easy to route and plenty adequate. I've used it on over 20 rigs with zero problems.
