I have a 10&quot; Pioneer in my truck. I wanted a little extra not a real thumper. It works great. I have 2 more slightly used ones setting on a shelf. If you are interested PM me.

I put a JL Audio Stealthbox with a 10&quot; woofer in my truck. It replaces the center seat, but the upholstery fits back on it - totally stealth, and it thumps nicely. Using a PPI 4 channel amp, I put MB Quart speakers in the factory locations up front and have an ALpine in dash CD. I don't have the tweeters from the factory, so the Quart's hide nicely behind the door panels. I'm into recording and somewhat of an audiophile - I'm very happy with this setup. Not exactly the kind of boom you hear going down the road - but accurate frequency response down to 40Hz or so.

That sounds like a pretty good setup dieselgeek. I am looking at 2 JL 12''s with a 600 watt amp. So I quess my question should be- Does any one have more than one subwoofer in their truck? I am looking for some big boom.

I am a little on the extreme side. I have a Pioneer in-dash CD player, with a remote (what can i say, i am lazy). I also have three JL Audio 8 W6 subwoofers under the back seat. I am pushing the subs with a 760 watt Sony x-plod amplifier.

MTX makes a formed box for two 10's under the rear seat. I don't have one, but the one I heard can kick.

What about fitting two 12's under the back seat? I've got the little storage bin under it right now but I plan on removing that when I get a system. What size amp would you recommend? I've got Pioneer 2 ways all the way around and a Sony X-plod 52Wx4 Head unit.

Talk to Scotty about his setup.. He has a nice stealth install of 2 subs in the back of his rig.. He also has removed the rear seat and re-insulated the whole interior. I have the JL stealthbox 12 replacing the center seat and the MTX thunderforms dual 10's under the back seats powered by a Rockford 1200 watt mono channel amp with an adjustable bass boost knob, lightning capacitor and an MTX crossover. It absolutely rocks and I can adjust the bass up and down dependant on the music just by moving the knob next to me. The highs are killer too, but thats a separate setup [laugh]<br>Evil

When I bought my truck, it had the MTX Thunderform box with 2 MTX 6000's. Sounded good until a voice coil burned up and took my amp with it. I replaced the MTX's with JL Audio 10W0's and they thump a lot harder in my opinion. I also replaced the MTX amp that burned up with a Rockford Fosgate from a previous install and put MTX 6x9's in the front doors. Finally, a JVC MP3 player sits in the dash (very sweet). Good luck with the install, make sure to use good wire, it does make a difference.

No I don’t carry to many passengers, but I'm singe so I don't need the back seast much, I’ll probably change to something else in the spring though cause i do miss the storage space .……:)

When you build a box for a woofer it has to be built to the proper volume or the sub will sound bad, most companies give recommended specs for proper sized boxes for their woofers…
so you have to buy a woofer(s) that will work in the space you have

Since there is about 2 cubic feet available behind the seats of reg cabs and under the seats of quad cabs you need to look for woofers that will work in that space …….

Here is a very good deal on a very nice woofer righ now (99 dollars for a 350 dollar sub)

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&amp;DID=7&amp;Partnumber=299-650

If you go to mbquart’s web page

http://www.mbquart.com/Mobile_detail.asp?model=PWD+254

and download the speaker applicatin guide

http://www.mbquart.com/press/MBQ_2001SpeakerAppGuide.pdf

on page 13 you’ll find the specs for the woofer and 2 recommended boxes 0.75 cubic feet sealed or 1.0 cubic feet ported with a 3”round x 9”long port. …..
so you’d easily be able to fit 2 of those under/behind your seat

here’s a page with some very good documentation on building a sub box under the seat of a quad cab, he also has instructions on building a 4” seat riser to get some more room under there

http://www.frontiernet.net/~jbenner/Subbox.htm

if building a box seems like too much, I’d go with the jlaudio stealth boxes, you can’t go wrong with JL audio products

you can also get a premaid q-logic box for a single 12 if you got a quad cab

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-aDIU5Kj9DVt/ProdView.asp?s=0&amp;c=10&amp;g=841&amp;I=044CDTX1++

add a 12 that works in the space and you’re set to go

mtx also makes premade boxes for under the back seat of a ram you can get it with or with out woofers installed, you can even get one with a built in amp

http://www.mtxaudio.com/caraudio/products/enclosures/DRXP20.cfm

JL audi also makes a prefab empty box, it fits one single 12 on the drivers side under the rear seat

http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/va_ramext.html

and of course there’s the before mentioned stealtboxes

http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/ramcentercushion.html

http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/ramctr2.html

http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/ramextendedcab.html

there a a lot of choices out there, go down to your local car audio shops and tell em what you want to do and see what they recommend……..

most importantly listen to lots of different stuff and pick what sounds good to you :)
have fun ………..

I too am into doing custom stereo's, in my car i have a JVC deck, pioneer two ways inside (4 total) and a dedicated 400w amp for my JL 12 w3. I have it inside a completely closed in box, hits harder in the car. For the dodge pick up, you can take out the storage bin and make a box to fit under that will hold two 12's. It is all in the design, i would port it on either side close to the center firing out to the center console. I would also taper it a little from back to front. Mount the amp under the drivers seat and put a protective cover, kind of like a kickplate, mounted there you can run the wires over and under the door sill around to the back of the box and up to under the dash. There is some other things that i would do also, like put a capacitor in, run a large fuse direct from the battery, put a cut off switch, get a new head unit with preamp out puts, prefferably two, something to consider also is that once you do all this, you might want to put an entertainment system in, overhead console tv scree etc..... LOL, there i go again, rambling on about what i want to do.

ultimately it boils down to taking measurements under the seat with the storage bin removed, making a template, seeing if the subwoofer will fit that depth, etc.

I'm to lazy to build my own box. Don't know much about it either. I think I may just go ahead with the MTX Thunderforms with two 10's under the back seat. Should be enough. As for the amp, I'll ask around bout that.

dodgeram
11-09-2002, 10:43 AM
mtx 6500d would be a nice match to that thunderform box, most do 400 watts rms at 4 ohms according to their test sheets, even though they are rated for 250 watts at 4 ohms ....... most mtx amps are underrated ...<br><br>the 6500d also has speaker level inputs so it could be used with your factory head unit if you so desired<br><br>any amp that does around 500 watts rms at 4 ohms will do the job nicely.........<br><br>look for variable crossovers when choosing an amp, the offer better tuneability than an amp with 1 preset crossover frequency<br><br>

i have 2 12's under the rear seat in TWO homemade boxes. it was quite the pain in the rear to make the boxes. they are sealed boxes so the sound is great, but they need to be carpeted to make them look good and blend in with the carpet around them. i am getting rid of them (too much bass since i have a 6 month old) and if you're interested, let me know. send me an e-mail and i'll try to get some pictures. i'm gonna swap to 6x9's and put the cargo divider back under the seat. i'll make you a hell of a deal if you're interested.

Anyone use bandpass boxes? They would fit in a regular cab with bucket seats but a bandpass box would sound real good in a extended cab with the backseat taken out. They cost alot of $$$ though. :o

Commatoze
11-11-2002, 10:49 AM
The problem I find with bandpass subs is the boomy non-musical sound they make at high SPL's. They are also very poor at following high transient bass lines. The advantages of course are they give a boost to SPL's in the bandpass region. Essentially, you get more bang for the buck.....provided you can live with it's disadvantages. Because this design is very good at hiding distorsion, you can be clipping or even bottoming out the voice coil, neither being good for the life expectancy of the transducer. Much of it is based on the music you listen to. Personally, I prefer a properly designed sealed box, driving it with plenty o'power. Extremely tight, uniform SPL bass across the spectrum results. Less desireable, but still acceptable would be a carefully designed ported enclosure.

First of all i know the MTX thunderforms suck, go to any car audio shop that knows what they are talking about and they will tell you that it does not have a complete seal and thus.....it sucks so dont buy that. I am also contemplating what setup i want, and after talking to the my guys at Roberts Audio in louisville i think i have decided on quite possibly the most expensive way to do it. I am taking my back seat to an uphulsterer (sp?) and getting it cut so i have two seats in the back. Roberts (which is quite possibly one of the best shops in the world...not a chain...i.e. ovation [yuk]) will then install a custom fiberglass box descending from my rear window to the floor, this will house my subs, 2 10&quot; solo baric L7, my amp, dvd player, and PS2. This setup is show worthy and will most definately make a person go deaf, 2 10&quot; square solo barics will hit harder than any system with 2 12's. And one other tip, anyone that says they have 2 different size subs in the same application (i.e.-10&quot; and 12&quot;) has no idea what they are talking about, the sound from a 12&quot; sub overtakes any sound that a smaller sub creates so you dont hear it.....any way just my $0.02

I'm told froma few audio shops and audio &quot;experts&quot; around here that the JL stealth enclosure that replaces center seat with a single 12&quot; speaker is the absolute best for sound in our trucks? I'm considering it as a new purchase to replace the 3 10&quot;s behind my seat.

I've seen some some pretty nice sounding bandpass systems. If everything is powered properly there isn't any problems from what I've seen in other types of vehicles.

DUM DUM DUM DUM box dimension!

OK I don't know how to post them really, I can draw it out in cad but I don't know how to convert to a JPG to upload it so I can try to just post the dimensions.

OK its a Wedge style box. So the Front if the widest part and the rear tapers to fit under the seat. This box Accommodates (2) JL12W3's but not V2's they are taller and this is the max that will fit under the rear seats with no mods.

The front is 10 3/4" high and the rear is 6" high. Now you have to also add a block at the front or extend the bottom edge of the box (this is how I did it) so the OA front is 12" high. Now the rear needs to be raised as well to allow the subs room to breathe as well. So the OA for the back of the box has to be 7 1/2". The width from outside to outside is 51".

I can't describe the under dimensions which is where the subs sit this is just the dimensions of the box. If anyone know's how to convert a dxf file to jpg then I can proceed to draw it out in cad and send it to them.

Take a look in my album. I have some pics of my sub boxes, they were built for 8" JL, but you might get some ideas to build you own sub boxes. Good luck. Also, don't worry too much about getting the exact air space for your subs as you can add polyfil. Here is a link to figure your air space.

I plan on running 2 Image Dynamics IDMAX v.3 12s powered by an MTX 1501D pushing about 2000wrms. For the boxes I havent decided yet, since I dont use the room underneath my seats, I was going to put a sub underneath each the driver and passenger seats, then I am not taking up any space that I was using. And I dont lose any room behind the seats where I have it packed full of stuff anyways.
They will be sealed enclosures, and probably covered in vinyl, I might glass them, but I am not sure yet. I will get pictures up when its all done though, it would be a nice alternative for us reg. cab guys who need to salvage all the space we can.

A word of caution to you all. I use to be BIG into systems. At one time I was trying to get Rockford Fosgate to sponser me. In my little saturn I had all RF. CD player with 18 volt pre outs and changer. 5.25 and tweets in custum kick panels with a 50.2 power amp. 8" subs built into the front doors with a 50.2 power amp, and 4 12" DVC in the trunck powered by 2 250.1 power amps hooked in parellel. Now keep in mind this was the old days when a 50.2 amp put out about 250 watts and the 250.1 put out 500+ watts. This system would put out 149.9 db (not bad for about 8 grand). Back to my work of caution, I now have a constant ringing in my ears. There is an actuall diagnosis for this but I cant remember what its called (I'be been to the doctor). Be carefull and listen to your music wisely. Dont listen to it at full volume all the time or for that matter ever. I have a few friends that also have this and it SUCKS.

18 volt pre out??? Is that for real or a typo? :D

95ram

Thats for real. It wasn't a normal preout. It was a cord that went to the amps. I cant real explain it. It was only available on the RF decks.

I know Denon made a deck for RF which was around 8V, just never heard of a deck having an 18v preout. Maybe you're talking about something different. I run an Eclipse H/U which has an 8V preout that goes to a Zapco SLB-U which will increase preamp voltage, balanced. I love the Zapco stuff.:D
