Over on the other Dodge site a study just came out that the new Valvolene Premium BLue CJ4 oil is not holding up too good in independent testing. I was getting ready to do an oil change in my new 07 and was going to use the PB as it is endorsed by cummins. I believe it came from the factory with PB in it... What would you guys recommend??? Stick with PB or pick an oil from the top of the list? Thanks1

I've used PB for 8 years. First in the '99 and now the '03. Blackstone has never said that my oil was not doing the job. All my reports come back excellent. Who is doing the independent testing? Amsoil??

I have heard that Valvoline oils do not always score top marks when compared to other oils. It is very likely that Cummins endorses the oil for some political or financial reason that has nothing to do with them believing that it is the best oil for the engine. The Cummins CEO and the Valvoline CEO probably play golf together and worked out some kind of a deal. I'd pick whichever oil I feel most comfortable about putting in my engine.

I too have used the premium blue but it was the old CI4+ oil. Now that oil is being replaced by the CJ4. It is backwards compatible but there is lots of debating going on!! Thanks for the advice.. hope to get a few more responses before I go buiy oil. GOing to call my local cummins dealer and see if they have any of the CI-4+

Cummins says what's best for their bottom line. It's funny because people take some of what Cummins says to heart and totally disregard other stuff. Example- most people will NOT switch to synthetic early because Cummins says so BUT when Cummins suggests to run a certain brand of oil, well, nobody listens.

Thanks for the link. Looks like TDR is way ahead of us on the CJ-4 oil issue. The issue is, as I understand it, that most new CJ-4 rated oil are much lower in zinc, which causes TBN numbers to be lower initially which shortens the useful lifespan of the oil. There is a thread on the General Diesel forum here, but this is a lot more information.

The CI recommended change intervals are 7500 miles. Since is tests out that the CJ may have a shorter useful lifespan, change your oil on a shorter interval. Did you not say somewhere here that you change oil at 5K? If so, you really have nothing to worry about using the CJ. Your concerns suggest changing the brand to illeviate unnecessary worry on your part.

Thanks CD, I do change my oil at 5,000 mile intervals. I just want to make sure I am putting the very best of oil in my truck as I need this one to REALLY last...!! LOLOL There won't be anymore 5.9's by the time I need a new truck again..

I went to TDR and looked at the main page. Since they don't list the names of the oils they tested in the .pdf file, how do you know what you're looking at?

Also - if you read the front page of TDR, it looks like Valvoline PB is performing about the same as the rest of the 'CJ' oils. I don't read that as Valvoline doing worse...

Actually if you open the PDF file and read down to the last page they have a "Summary" part where you actually see the brand names of the oils previously discussed by number....

Coolslice, all companies say whats best for there bottom line. Don't be naive to think some don't. It doesn't make them unethical to try to make a profit as long as it is truthful. If you don't have confidence in Cummins, the Durajap or Powerstuck might be your next engine of choice.
