Question How strong are wheels/ball joints/axle?

I was driveing down a snowy road at about 25 MPH in 4WD and side-swiped the curb.

Didn't see it because the road hadn't been plowed yet so side-swiping the curb nudged the truck back toward the middle of the street, the truck slid on the slippery road.

The truck is a 2004.5 CTD 2500 quad cab.

My instincts tell me it didn't hit hard enough to do any damage.

That front-end can take a good amount of punishment right?

If the road wasn't so slippery the truck probably would have climbed up on top of it instead of slideing away from it.

The tire didn't lose any air.

You will blow the tire off the bead before you ever break anything by hitting a curb. If it was just side to side force, then the only thing you would have to worry about would be the trac-bar... As it controls side-to-side sway. If nothing is popping or banging and your alignment is ok, then your truck is fine...

Man I did the same thing a couple of winters ago. I mangle'd up a portion of the lip on the right front wheel. Even my biggest BFH wouldn't bend it back. You can't even see it unless you look real close. Its amazing how many people look close!!

You'll be fine.

Thanks.

I thinks it's fine. No damage to the wheel whatsoever and the rub mark on the tire is right in the middle, halfway between the wheel lip and the top/treads. So the wheel didn't contact the curb.

Also, the alignment seems the same.

I was curious about possible damage because even though the truck is very heavy duty, it still weighs 7000 pounds.

Give that kind of weight some good momentum and it doesn't matter how heavy duty it is, things can still bend/break.

Still learning alot about this vehicle. I love it. I just took it out on a very steep snow/ice covered hill, put it in 4WD and punched it.

That thing shot up that hill in a perfectly straight line, no tire spin.

Awesome traction.

The ball joints are JUNK! I had a set go out at 34k miles with OE tires...dealer put in a new set and sent it over town to get an alignment and they sent it back saying the new joints were out of spec and they won't touch it. Dealer put in yet another set and they seemed to be ok as the shop aligned it. Part numbers for both the gas and diesel engines are the same....does that tell you anything? Here is my theory. I talked to a few Dodge dealers at great length asking them if they see near as many ball joint failures on gas motored trucks....answer, hardly any at all. My opinion is that the weight of the CTD is killing the BJ's, especially if you live off 3 miles of gravel like I do. They dealer told me that Dodge suggested that I run the front tires at 60-65 psi to help soften the blow to the joints....what a band aid! Sopesedly Dodge knows about the weak joints and "MAY" come out with a recall for same. Would also be nice if they added some grease zerks as well.....that's too much to ask I'm sure.
