Stock turbo replacement Q's...

Today my turbo decided to call it quits on my way to dinner with the family. I thought my torque converter was finally coming apart from the racket I heard, only to find I now had no power and lots of smoke. I pulled the inlet hose and found the shaft very loose and the vane had ground into the housing. I managed to limp the truck home (only about 6 miles) being careful not to put too much fuel to it coming up our hill. Now I'm in need of a replacement, and I don't know much about turbos for our trucks.

I'm very short on money right now, since I'm still trying to fund the last parts of my transmission replacement/upgrade. I don't pull a lot of weight very often. Performance isn't my #1 priority, but its nice of course. Only mods to the engine have been a Megamouth downpipe (only because the turbo's rear flange had cracked on me last year), and a #10 plate.

I'm looking for the most cost effective replacement. I don't mind a used turbo if its in good condition for the right money. I sure can't afford a new one ($1200 at the *******). I found some remans on ebay for around $400, which is still a bit out of my price range (working part time, low pay, and a family). What is the going rate for a used HX35? HX40? What would be my best option at this point?

With the other problems that have been nickel and dimeing me, if I can't get a turbo for a good price, I'll be forced to find another vehicle and retire this one. I hate to do that, since the engine ran so well, other than the turbo issue. I basically have until the middle of next week to either repair this truck or buy a replacement with the funds I was going to put towards the new clutch and flywheel, since this is my only transportation.

Used HX35's pop up on the classifieds here and on TDR fairly often, usually for around $300. I don't think you have the fuel for an HX40 or S300 currently; stock will work fine.

I agree with you on this one here

once a plate goes in as well as other fueling mods, or if you plan to do those, u might wanna step up to the ones stated, but for now a stocker is fine..

I usually like to upgrade instead of just replacing, but because of my current financial situation, I'll be lucky if I can afford to just replace it with a used stocker. I was eventually hoping to go to a 100 plate after the Spicer conversion, and maybe injectors before too long (they seem to be a very cost effective upgrade from where I am, if I understand correctly), but I'm really having to weigh my options. With a truck this old, at 260K miles, with a bad trans AND needing a turbo, I'm having a very hard time justifying shelling out $1500+ (between completing the trans install and replacing the turbo). I checked the classifieds with only a little possible luck, and there doesn't seem to be much on ebay right now. I'm crossing my fingers, but it doesn't look good for the truck.

i think the hy spools faster and has a different housing like a 9cm where as a hx has like a 12 cm i think which spools a little slower but also cools egts a little better

I see in your sig that your truck has an auto tranny so yes, your truck does have the hy turbo. They have 9cm exhaust housing. The Hx turbo has a 12cm exhaust housing. The hy spools a little faster but doesnt cool quite as well.

The HY also has a smaller compressor wheel/housing... BigBlue has some comparison pics in his gallery...

Yeah it should bolt right up i think. One advantage of the HX turbos is that you can put larger exhaust housings on them to help control egts a little more.

I pulled my turbo apart today. I think I'm fortunate that the housings aren't damaged as bad as I thought, just some scraping, with very minimal grooving where the impeller rubbed. The impellers also don't seem as bad as I thought they would be. I think I'm going to try one of the $80 rebuild kits off ebay and cross my fingers. If I can make it last until after the trans is in, I'll be able to spend the money on a better turbo (better condition, not necessarily larger).

IF I was to move up to the next level turbo, what would it be? The 2 things that would be nice would be: 1. Faster spooling at my current power level, and 2. Ready for more power when I'm able to do injectors and a different fuel plate, and GSK. I'm just wondering if, while I'll be changing the turbo anyway, if I shouldn't spend the money somewhere other than a stock replacement? I just want to be prepared, and spend the money once, if possible.

Jim
