What is the potential of it? hp, boost?I am just curious. I am going to be doing some more mods and I don't want to tear into the engine just yet.

Around 45-50 psi of boost is where you want to start watching it. You should be good below that. Above that, and you should start seriously thinking about O-ringing it.

Depends on your foot and if you let the truck warm up properly, alot of variables.
But after 40psi on a very regular basis you might have to get O ringed.

Some people have used a higher torque method on stock gasket and bolts and have been able to hold into the 50's.

So do people just retorque the head bolts or replace them with aftermarket ones for the high torque method?

Torque the factory ones.

It seems to be truck specific. My 12 valve has had the Marine gasket in it for just over 3 years now. It finally blew out at 76 PSI and super high timing. It held at 480, 525, 572, and 620 HP. It failed in the 675-700 range. I ripped the streets up for 3 years.

Some guys install a turbo and injectors and pop the stock gasket in a heartbeat.

My headgasket is stock also. Just retorqued the factory bolts to 118ftlbs. Has held up to 75 lbs of boost, normally set to just 60 though. Been running twins since Aug 03 more than 8k miles. Saying that it could blow soon, you are taking chances above 50 psi. I am going to ring it soon but hate to pull the head when it is working fine. Tim

Last time I ordered head bolts the Cummins shop was able to get them to me 4 hours later. However, I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a set of studs if you're going to try and hold 75+ even with an oringed head. That way you don't end up like me; driving a saturn around for a week.

I figure I will be pushing around 45psi of boost w/o a o-ringed head with timing set at 19* do you think re tq-in the bolts will hold that for this year anyway? it has held 38 psi of boost at 19* for the last 3 years and thats even on a cold engine.

Would it be worth the effort to retorque them even if I am not going to be using anymore boost yet. I havn't even look at the bolts, I don't know how hard of a job it is.
