Stock EGT Levels with 13,500 Lb trailer
Does anyone have experience with a stock truck (with gauges) pulling a 13-14K trailer up hills? Have you seen excessive EGT's ?
I am debating whether or not I should get gauges and / or 4" exhaust. Of course I'd love to put in the gauges and the 4" exhaust But I would rather put it off for a while...$$
ALSO, do you know if putting a 4" exhaust is enough of a power increase that you need to upgrade the clutch?
Thanks for any feedback
My truck is a 2002 2500 4x4 with 6spd HO and 3.53 rear.

Just straight pipe the stock exhaust. The stock exhaust is good for 350hp. Adding an exhaust will not add any power. You will get some cooler EGT's and a little quicker turbo spool up. I'd also recommend a Scotty 2 intake or a BHAF. Either will work (although the Scotty is better ) and both will help reduce EGT's (the Scotty has PROVEN to be better in this category). Of course, I highly recommend getting a Fuel pressure (very important), Boost, and EGT gauge (most important). Click on "Merrick" in my sig for gauges. He can hook ya up. Rod at Wildcat Diesel is also a great guy to do business with.

Thanks Big Blue. Forgive my ignorance but why the fuel pressure gauge?
I forgot to mention I have an exhaust brake (BD) . My local BD dealer in Calgary suggests I put in Pyro, Turbo Boost and backpressure gauges...I am looking at putting one of the BD X-Monitors which is a digital readout with three 'gauges'. You have to order in the model that reads the three things you want.
Would you recommend fuel pressure over Exhaust backpressure?
Thanks again

I would HIGHLY recommend a fuel pressure gauge over an exhaust back pressure gauge. The exhaust back pressure gauge is pretty pointless. The fuel pressure gauge is important because it keeps tabs on your lift pump. If your lift pump dies, it could take out your injection pump (which on average costs $1500 to R&R). And the lift pumps on these trucks are notorious for dying.

Best way to keep the EGT down on a stock truck is to keep the RPM up. If you have to floor the truck to maintain speed on a hill, drop down a gear (or two, if necessary). Low RPM and a heavy load = high EGT, let it breathe when you work it. Like the others said, bigger exhaust won't make much difference in power. It just helps keep the EGT under control when you add a fueling box or injectors.

1300 degF pre-turbo pulling a 13,500 lb 36' 5th wheel when stock. Adding an EZ (with boost elbow), BHAF & 4" exhaust dropped that to 1100 degF pre-turbo.
