Steering wobble/"jerkiness" in slow turns

Hello Gentlemen:

'99 24V shortbed stock quad cab a/c auto gvw 8800 194K on it

When I am going slow the steering wheel gets"jerky" when making turns. It comes and goes but is staying a little longer each time. Any ideas? Power steering pump? Steering box?

I'd love your input so I don't spend a fortune with a mechanic that doesn't know how to fix it correctly the first time! Thank you!

Bob

But it comes and goes, wouldn't the front axle u-joints make it wobble all the time and even when going straight or hitting bumps? The steering seems a lilte "harder" when it happens too. Sometimes it seems that the problem is reduced after turning the truck off or turning the wheel from R to L and back a few times. Thank you for your repsonses guys. I'll PM you when I get a chance tomorrow Wannadiesel. Again, thanks!

The U joints are pretty much out of the picture when you are driving straight ahead. That's why it only does it in turns.

if its anything like mine, it almost feels like youre in 4WD... i think i have it narrowed down to the pump starting to go south, but i dont have the ambition to replace it
according to mitchell, i have to take my vac. pump off with it, but when i look at it, it looks like i could just undo the lines and then the bolts/studs and slide it off, then bolt the new one back on....i may be wrong
anyone done one around here??

Yes, that is exactly it! I t feels like you are in 4WD on dry pavement. So far I'll have the guy check the U joints and power steering pump. Please keep the info coming...

Have you tried pulling the filter screen and cleaning? it might be partially plugged.
