Steering on a turn

Guys, I have a 94 diesel 4x4 with 3 in lift. and 33s. When turning sharp left and right at any speed, the truck and steering wheel shimmy back and forth.

The other day I took the truck off the ground, and cut the wheels both ways, and it seemed to turn just fine. When its off the ground and in 4x4, and the wheels are cut, it does the problem. looking out the door, I can see the Wheel, acting like it is having a restriction to turn. Does this sound like a Universal joint problem?

every time I turn It does the problem.
Any sugestions
Ryan

It sounds like resistance caused by transfer case not allowing the front axle to differentiate against the back axle. Sounds normal to me. My Jeep Cherokee with NP231 t-case did it. My Jeep CJ7 with Dana 300 t-case did it. This should only be happening in 4WD though.

Your front axle is always engauged. When you crank the wheel, the "U" joints in the steering knuckle also get cranked, sort of bottomed out. As the wheel turns, the "U" joints fluctuate (sp?) a bit which you feel in the steering wheel. It will rock back and forth. Back off on the steering wheel a bit, your turning radius will not change, but the strain on the system will. I have manual hubs and I do not have that rocking motion, but I do if I crank the steering wheel over in 4wd.

thanks guys, It ended up being my front U-joint. I pulled the axle shaft out yesteday, and could hardly move the joint one way. Pulled the U-joint all apart and was rusty. I guess the person who I bought the truck from didn't think thoes needed greased!
