Steering column movement (up in firewall)
I have been having the same steering clunking popping etc,etc feeling that I read so much about, yes all the usual stuff are fine, But when you grab the shaft under the brake master cylinder, right at the U joint the whole shaft moves side to side and up and down about 1/16" (going into the firewall) that is what I keep feeling on the wheel. When driving there is no physical movement on the wheel BUT you feel it.
When looking there is a shaft in a shaft, the inside one is only moving.
Anyone have any experience with this, there must be a bearing, but no way to get to it without removing the whole steering wheel. .
I was getting ready to throw a new borgeson shaft in, but that's not the problem or is it?
Please help.
Thanks Mike

Is the play at the slip joint? If so the I-shaft is worn out. Also look under the dash to see if the play is from the upper column - not too common. Does the I-shaft have a round rubber ring say about 3 to 4 inches in diameter on it. If so make sure the rivets are secure both holding the collar to the I shaft and to the metal strap that goes around the strap.

Thanks for the reply I will double check those things, But I think its comming from the column, I got the star tools today to remove the plactic from around the steering column to see what is there.
This must not be common.

Well its the column all right, there is play with the shaft that comes through the fire wall.
Anybody have any experience with removing the steering column or replacing it or fixing it.
I found a column at newdodgeparts.com for $240 anyone know how to replace it.
