steering gear box problems

Ok, here`s my situation. I have a 01 2500. I`ve replaced the the steering gear box 3 times in a year now. I have a DSS brace I should mention.

What is happening, is that the end of the gear box that looksl ike a dome is moving about a 1/4 in and out ever time i turn the wheel. I just replaced it again and within 2 weeks, my steering is sloppy. They are napa remans. I e-mailed psc and they no longer make a gear box.

Napa is gonna refund me my $$$ plus core $$$ but i need a new box......Any suggetions? Truck only has 90,000 miles, and all other suspension partare good.

Where do I get the 3 turn box? The dealer wants $900+ for a reman. with only a 1yr warrenty!!

Pretty sad when no one seems to know a thing about 2nd gen steering boxes on this forum.

Actually, do a search there is endless posts about steering boxes on this site. I'll give you my two cents.... I recently put 4 reman boxes in my truck, all junk. the input had at least an 8th inch turn before the output would budge. I then bought an arg and it was junk also. This is supposedly a higher quality reman. I then returned that, got all my money back, and still had my core refund, and went and bought a psc box. I bought that brand new last month and it works great. So unless they stopped making them in the last month you can still get them. Get the quick steer one too, makes a world of difference.

good luck.

I dont think it matters which box you buy, (no experience with psc) but you have to do the adjustments as they are NEVER adjusted properly outta the box, (thats been my experience, even on GM boxes )

I`m not having that issue. Like I said, it gets the play when the large cap at the front (the dome lookin thing with the snap ring) will actually move in and out. I called psc and they no longer makea box for the 2nd gen. I have searched, and haven`t een a post about this issue I am having. That is why I post.....I`m no dummy to these forums, I usually can find what `i`m looking for, but in this instance , I couldn`t.

I agree with that to some extent, but all of the reman boxes were junk even after trying to adjust them. The psc came and was very tight.

Well, my OEM box is junk. I called PSC last week, and they weren't interested. Said they *might* have new boxes out in 2009.

I ended up ordering an AGR 12:1 (2.75 turn lock to lock). It was 400 including shipping, no tax, no core. I hope it's great, but I'm not holding my breath. At least I get to keep mine? Worst case scenario, I send it back...

I'm not satisfied with my 4 turn AGR box. It has too much play in it & that's after paying shipping and returning it once. Adjusting myself would have voided the warranty. Also, you over pay when buying direct as AGR charges full "retail" so as not to under price their jobbers. It also takes a long time to receive the box as they apparently make them to order. AGR has a short warranty 3 months I think. At least shop around for a better price. I wonder what the wear parts are & what the rebuild possibilities are for my stock box that's on the shop floor. Proceedure is in the FSM.

steer and gear

I went through several steering boxes a few years ago. Finally got a reman from steer and gear in ohio. It has been tight for 6 years now with no issues. You might want to check them out.

I'll let you know how my AGR goes. It's due here in the next 2-3 days.

If it doesn't work out, back to the drawing board!!

I bought a steering gear from Lees Manufacturing, which builds the steering gears for all the Nascar teams, for my 68 pro-touring camaro and it is unreal to say the least. From what I understand he will rebuild a factory steering gear to the specs you need. I plan on doing this for my Dodge when it is needed which seems to be sooner than later. Having it built and done correctly is worth the wait and expense to me. I figure it will be in the $300 range to have it doen since I paid $525 for the one for my Camaro outright!

Hey guys,
here's the scoop. I called the wholesale steering place in San Diego and they did some research and will build the 12-1 steering boxes for the second gens for 250.00 including shipping. They come with a one year warranty. It turns out that the 12-1 box is a 2.75 turn box which is the same as the 3rd gen trucks.

The are also checking on the pressure we must have from our pumps to make sure we wont have any problems (might be OK or we may only have to change a spring)

I ordered my box today

Their number is 1-800-399-7845

forgot to mention that there is a 75.00 core charge
