I know there are tons of steering problem threads. I have done a search and found a few threads that were similar, but no one ever posted back as what solved the problem.

Problem is when returning to center from a right turn it seems as though the power steering quits and if you release some pressure on the steering wheel it will resume and then act normally. If you try to power through it and force the wheel to center it will continue as though there is no power steering. This started a week ago and is getting worse. Occurs at any speed and about 1/2 the time. Only happens when the wheel is turned more than 1/2 way to the right.

The front u-joints have less than 10K on them. I jacked up the front-end and checked them to be sure they are good. I see no other steering parts that have excessive play. I flushed the PS fluid twice and put in ATF +4. Which made no difference. I am leaning toward the gear box but wanted to be sure before throwing parts at it. Thanks.

Just wanted to post back with the results in case anyone else has the same problem. It was the steering box. After a week of driving and trying to diagnose the problem it began to literally lock up during or after a turn left or right. If I made a turn and felt it lock I could turn the wheel slightly back and then it would unlock and come back to center. The old box showed no leaks or excessive play in the output shaft. Hope this helps someone in the future.
