starts like a ford

Hey guys talked a co-worker into buying a dodge/cummins to haul his horses around. He found a 96 low kms[136,000]. what brothers me is the way it starts[4 to 5 cranks]. My former 02 and my current 1st gen both started/start on the first crank warm or cold. Now I know that the 12v have the p-pump which is differant than the ve or the 24v ,however with a slight thottle it does start on 1st crank . So is the idle set to low[what is idle rpm ] lift pump weak?some fuel advance set- up for starting misfunctioning? tks for replys his truck is stock 5 speed with bd exhaust brake

Idle is probably too low. To raise it, he'll need a 10mm wrench and some patience. Oh, a small forearm helps reach it. It's kinda on the back of the pump, and maybe a little lower. Best thing to do is have the person who will be adjusting the idle stand on the driver's side of the truck and move the part of the linkage up at the front of the pump by hand, so that they can get an idea of how the part of the linkage at the back of the pump moves. That will show them where the linkage touches something (the idle screw) as you let off the accelerator pedal. Once you find the screw, turning it clockwise will tighten it and raise the idle speed.

Idle should be at 750 or so in a manual transmission

With the AC on. An auto should be in park at about 900 or so, so when u drop it into gear it will go ahead and stay at 750 or so. The idle screw probably needs to be adjusted, The slight throttle is the key here, ur idle needs to come up.

Pushing the accelerator generally won't make it start quickly when an air leak is the problem. I know, I've been there...

Of course, replacing the rubber lines on the suction side of the fuel system would probably be a good idea if they've been neglected for too long.

Cool

mine had an air leak at the fuel water separator and gave me a world of trouble! Hard to start it, crank the crp out out of it and then two cylinders fired then so on.... check general things like that, and also fuel lines, i know mine ar fine beacause they were replace from front to back at 141k... also the lift pump was done at 141k so im good for a little while now!
