starting problems...

ii put a 5 speed in my truck from a auto.. i still need to figure out the neutral safety. i read the thread on it but dont understand the wiring diagram.
so, i turn the ignition on ans jump the started.. okay, the volts on the dash says 14volts always. but my batteries wont hold a charge.. i dont know if its the altenator or what. i pulled all of the battery cables off the altenater wire and the radio still worksand lights stay on.. i dont know where it gets the power from. and why do my batteries not hold are they junk? i dont think so because if i put them on a charger they will hold but in my truck they will die..maybe i have something drawing power while its sitting but i cant figure out what it could be. if any one has any input i would reallly appreciate it.. thanks

Congrats on putting in the 5 speed. I'm sure it was lots of work. Sounds like you have an electrical nightmare. Too many variables to even try to figure this one out.

Where the electrics functioning normally before the swap?

I guess the only thing I can say is, start over with the electrics. If it was working normally before the swap then disconnect everything you messed with, then go one circuit at a time. Start with the basics. Start with the starting system first, then the charging circuits. Then go to accessories like lights and such.

Remember, one at a time, check it, if normal then proceed. You may find the problem when disconnecting things. Then again you should at least be able to isolate the problem when you start to put it back together one step at a time. The problem circuit will usually reveal itself when you first hook that circuit up and then check it. Good luck with it. Electrics can be a real headache. KD

I know that my post was pretty much useless.. you are right, way too many variables. but im confused and looking for answers anywhere.
okay, i had to swap in a 5 speed because i burried the truck in mud and ruined the auto but it was drivable besides major slippage. occasionally it wouldnt start so id have to jump the starter over. im going to go through and pull all of the connections i can find apart and see if anyhting is dirty. im pretty sure my charging system and batteries are good becuse if i put the batteries on charge they will hold it and my charging sysem is good because when i touch the altenator wire to the bat it will through a spark. only when the truck sits for a while something will draw power.
and please i cnat figure out how to owire my neutral safety
thanks for the comment.
