Starting problem

I am haveing a problem with starting the engine weither it is cold or warm. It will crank for about 10 seconds before it will start. Runs good once it starts though. I figured it was a fuel leak but am unable to find one. Any ideas will help thanks

Re:Starting problem

Try something, manualy pump the fuel, and or cycle the ignition switch a few times not for the heater, but to get fuel up to the pump, then try to start,it sounds like a air is getting in somewhere, maybe timing?? Goodluck Rick

Re:Starting problem

Sounds like you're losing prime, maybe? I dont think cyclin your key is gonna help you much, but pumping the hand/manual fuel transfer pump should get it back up there. If nothing else, crack an inj. line and have someone crank it for you. If you're not seeing any fuel leaks, it's gonna take a little more research to figure it out. Might could be the fuel overflow valve? Let us know and good luck.

Re:Starting problem

I may be stating the obvious here but have you tried replacing the supply and return fuel lines from your tank?

Re:Starting problem

I tried to cycle the key a couple times and that made no difference. I also tried to use the hand pump and prime it, that also made no difference, When using the hand pump I could hear the injection pump making a noise after the first pump so I figure that I am not losing prime.

Re:Starting problem

It could be something as simple as a low idle speed. Try putting a little pressure on the throttle as you try to start it. It doesn't do much good to pump the throttle on a diesel. I didn't see if you had an auto or not, but if you do the idle speed should be about 750 rpms in gear WITH the A/C on. If it is low the adjustment is on the back of the p7100 pump.

Re:Starting problem

Hey,there is a clue, when you hand pumped it,did the hand pump get hard to pump?If it takes a lot of strokes after sitting over night then you have a leak in the lines somewher,Mine was acting this way and I could not see any visible leaks on the two feul lines above the starter, but when I took the starter off and got a good eye on it they were bad,so if you have not replaced them check them out good, When you got the hand pump pumped up you will sometimes hear a honk? Try it again and also try what MnTom suggested, goodluck Rick

Re:Starting problem

I'm wondering if it's the same problem I was having with the solonoid. Mine would take quite a while to start but the solonoid was sticking open and wouldn't suck up and eventually quit altogether. Try to manually push up the plunger before trying to start. At least you could rule this out quite easily.

Re:Starting problem

My 97 just did this the other day. It was running fine when I shut it off and then would not start again. I had a crack in a fuel line and it was sucking too uch air to start. That is where I would start.

Re:Starting problem

Check out the supply and return lines. The stock one are good for about 3-4 years. This is a very common issue.

This is common

First, let me say that the offerings already mentioned could have been the cause. Loss of prime is a frequent problem. It usually, tho not always, takes overnight (or several hours) to show, as the tiny leak that starts in the fuel hoses or heater is small.
Since you reached down and pumped your prime pump and got a noise right away, prime is not the problem. That and the fact that the problem happens with a warm engine tells me you are not getting fuel, but for a different reason. Your fuel solenoid is most likely at fault. It is not pulling in right away. Before you rush off to buy one, check it carefully. Many of these are replaced unnecessarily. The relay that feeds the pull in winding of the solenoid can also be the problem. The most likely reason I have seen, is the feed wire for the relay is corroded. It is hooked to the drivers' side battery positive post. When I had this problem, I took the wire off the battery and moved it to the main bus on the fender well. That will keep it from ever getting corroded again.
See if your solenoid is pulling in right away when you hit the starter. If not, you have some electrical troubleshooting to do. I see you're in WA state. Me too, in Burlington. Let me know if I can help.
