Starter purchase issues

I have an 01 Quad cab with a 6 spd 24 valve that I need a starter for. Went to the parts store and they keep giving me the wrong starter. Mine has a short nose and the one they have is a long nose. No listing for different starters in 01. Is the 6 spd a different starter then all the rest?

Usually all you need is new brushes and/or contacts. Its an easy fix. I am still using the original starter with new contacts installed in 2003.

Find a rebuild shop if you can't do the job yourself it's cheaper for them to do it if you can't compaser to a new starter

Auto parts starters are notorious for lasting less than 10,000 miles on Cummins engines.
If you must use one don't give up your OEM for a core, have it rebuilt for when you get tired of constantly replacing the "lifetime warranty" Chinese junk the auto parts sold you

I just had issues with my starter, go to start the truck and click, click. after a few tries it would start, new contacts solved the problem. super easy to install. purchased off E-bay for $18. they also sold other starter & alternator parts. Keep your old one like infidel said above.

Starter issues

Found a spacer mounted on the starter, not sure if it is removable but will try.
The plan was to rebuild mine but need the truck this weekend so partstore starter is convenient. Will purchase big contacts and upgraded brush housing.

I just did the contacts on my starter. One of them was burned down to almost nothing. It was a cheap and easy fix...less than 10 bucks for the contacts and another 15 for the plunger, (which really didn't need replacing but I decided to anyway). The brushes, bearings, gears and everything else were in perfect condition.

Chrysler only sells complete starters. I got my contacts from a local auto electric shop which rebuilds starters, alternators etc.

The kits are also available on ebay.

Awesome, this thread just saved me from going to NAPA and getting a new starter. I thought something was fishy when I was told that the core was $162, and the new starter was $174...
