Don:
How many miles on the truck? The starter contacts usually go out at about 100K - 125K miles and the starter acts the way you describe it. If you don't get it fixed pronto, you run the risk of the starter staying engaged when the contacts lock up and won't release and that is a good way to ruin the starter and possibly burning up the relay. If you are over 100K and have not replaced them, this is the first thing I would do to trouble shoot. You can get them from Fosters on the west coast cheap and they are easy to install. Their phone number is (253) 272-1444 or (800) 414-0769. The other option which costs a little more is to buy a rebuilt starter.
Also, you should probably check all your connections and grounds to make sure they are clean.

I second the contacts. Mine looked just like the bad ones here. I got very lucky on the bolts. I had an oil leak that soaked the starter for a few months before I got the leak stopped. Made for real easy removal! One hour start to finish.
