Starter contact replacement

I had the typical click from the starter that is a sign of worn starter contacts. I ordered the kit from Geno's with contacts and new plunger. I pulled the starter last nite and opened it up and found that one contact was worn paper thin and was just about gone. If not fixed, I would have been stuck for sure. Bolted in new contacts and put in the new plunger and will bolt the starter back on this afternoon.

If you havent checked this on your ride, give it a look. The fix is easy and the kit for Geno's was $35 for over sized contacts and new plunger. I want to thank Infidel (Bill) for his tip on using the jack and 2x4 to loosen the upper starter bolt....it worked great. Use a good quality 12 point 10mm box end wrench on the 3 starter bolts and you will have it out in no time. Remember to disconnect the batteries to avoid the fireworks display when unhooking hte starter power lead.

Thanks for all the good tips and advice on here. It has saved me lots of time and a bunch fo money.

atthepark,

This is good advice, I found out the hard way, my contacts were bad and couldn't tell until one day the stater stuck on and kept cranking, couldn't get it to stop, which over heated the fuel solenoid and harness and started it on fire. also lost the a couple of fusible links, if it would have burned a little more it would have lost that huge collection of wires that run above the solenoid. SO, if i'd only spent the $30 at Larry Bs I would have saved a lot. I had to buy another new Fuel solenoid, this one was only a few months old.
My stater is repaired and truck is back on the road. Everyone should do this, its good maintainance and very EASY.
A gear wrench also helps with those bolts, once you get them broke free.
