Stake pockets and Rail protectors - 2007
Real happy with my new 2007 2500 - until I bought Mopar bed rail protectors (82209988) and they're too short for my 6'3" bed and the stake hole pockets don't match up either. Then I discovered the stake holes are about 3/16" shorter than my old 2001! And nothing fits them! What gives? Was that a 'New' feature for 2007 or did they screw up before that? The stake pocket holes are gutless so you can't use them. Maybe I shoulda bought a Cab/Chassis . Anybody run into this?

Make sure you got the right ones, sometimes they mix up PNs.
I ordered some covers from Napa before, went to put them on my truck and they were 2" too long and stake pockets were way off. Turned out it was the right PN ordered, but they sent me some from a shortbed chevy...

Looked in Cabela's online catalog... Hmmm, they have one of those drop-in disappearing rings - but it fits 97-03. And the rubber block type I bought yesterday says, "fits 94 to current Ram" Has the stake pocket been screwed up since 04 and I just bought into it? Come to think of it, I've never bought anything new that didn't have to be remanufactured!

I have the aluminum diamond plate rail protectors. They pulled up at the ends so I installed rivets. To fill the holes, I installed my old Ford stainless steel flush mount tie downs. Perfect fit too.(They still say Ford on them, oh well).

Solved part of the problem: I had Mopar 82209988 rail protectors; A sharp-eyed parts man said wrong ones. Traded for 82209283. Much better! Yes, there is a difference in 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton beds! The stake pocket hole continues to be a travesty. Plan 'A' - drill a 3/8 hole in the bottom of the stake pocket and install a long bolt/nut pointing up. Use a 3/8 rod coupling to tie to the bottom of one of the older expanding rubber block type of inserts. Of course, the rubber block needs to have 1/8 shaved off each side of the long dimension to fit... Naturally, Dodge doesn't make anything to fit the screwed-up stake pocket hole so they don't care!

My Putco Stainless rails fit my 06 shortbed (mega cab) perfectly. The rubber stake pocket inserts have a tendency to loosen, just like most of these types of attachments I've used over the years. I have no experience with rail protectors. I'll look up the Putco part number if you are looking at rails. The way these rails are designed they adjust to some variation in stake pocket distance. The rails are round tubing, so if you need to shorten them a tubing cutter does a nice job I think.
