stacks or straight pipe??!!

alright..summer's here...im looking for a nice deep sound...love the looks of the stacks...straight pipe would require less work...what do u guys think...i got an extended cab as well how tough would it be to do the stack split under the bed..can it be done ?? or do i have to move the gas tank?? it would be a whole lot nicer not to have that ugly split in my box...

...i also dont want a headache on a daily ..wanna take road trips without needing a tylenol...im thinking 4 inch from the turbo down and then the stacks 5 inches..maybe 6 just for looks

comments boys!!

I'd do the 5" miter cut stacks that are maybe 2" above the cab. From what I've heard, there's no drone that way. The 6" apparently drones. What sinze bed do you have? Long or short? If you have a long bed, you can do the split under the bed. If you have short, it's a little more difficult but I think it can be done.

It's only a resonator. It has nothing to do with emmisions.

You don't have a cat. All it does is affect sound. Nothing else.

Stacks AND straight pipe! I have the straight pipe now and really like it. Stacks are next for me, 5" miter cut just above the cab, split in the middle of the bed.

haha funny guy...what about getting those stacks split under the bed?? how to go about that?...i dont wanna have a delay of smoke in one stack versus the other because of length distances underneath

I have heard of people doing the split under the bed, but from what I can tell unless you do a body lift, there is really no way to get the plumbing to work out around the tank.

You will want the same length and same plumbing after the split to insure even smoke from both.

The split under the bed (and over the tank) is doable. That is how I have mine set up. I have 4 inch from the turbo back that runs into a foot long section of flex pipe (so the system will "give" a little under high flex, I then fabricated a "Y" and ran equal length sections of pipe to my 5 inch stacks.
The section over the tank IS the most difficult part of the whole job, but if you can be creative with a cut off and a mig, it should make for a very clean install.
To make it a little easier to go over the tank have a piece of brazing rod handy so you can get the idea of what kind of angles your looking at, then just cut and weld your pipe to match.
Also if your gonna go turbo back, save youself a couple hundred bucks and build your downpipe yourself. All you need is 2 medium or long radius 45's. Have your cut off (chop saw) handy and have at it.
Over all you will need:
2 med. or long radius 45's
2 short radius 90's
1 "Y" or 2 more 45's and fabricate it yourself
1 foot and a half to two foot section of flex
Chop saw
Mig
Oh yeah and the STACKS
Good luck and let me know if you need any help,
Scott

BTW: I have PLENTY of clearance around the tank with no lift.

thanks bud..that sounds logical..splitting it under will surely make it look a whole lot better...thats for sure!

im assuming i can buy pretty much all the pieces and stacks at any big rig shop?!
i wanna save money naturally so the only thing chromed are the stacks...where can i get the rest of the stuff?..(alos how much flex piping can i use under the bed? can i pretty much flex pipe the whole thing after the turbo downpipe?..just want opinions on that scenario)

Flex pipe doesnt actally flex a whole lot , plus it corrodes much faster than galvonized pipe and it doesnt flow as well AND it is more expensive than regular galvonized . You would be better off gettin a joint (10 ft) of 4in gal. and just a couple feet of flex. There wont be too much need for flex to make your corners because it is basically just a straight shot from the downpipe to the bed wher you will Y off.
I got all my 4in from NAPA and a local truck shop. I got my stacks from a chrome shop about an hour from my house.
Where are you located?

Scott

I split mine in the bed and y pipe is offset to the passenger side along the natural exhaust line. The only time I saw uneven smoke is when I had a y pipe with out a divider plate in the center. With the divider plate its nice and even. Couple more pics in member photos. I say do the stacks!!!! If you dont want to cut a hole in your rig, maybe straight pipe, either way it sounds good.

Here you see nice even smoke
