SRW TO Cab & Chassis DRW

Well I did the search for this topic and couldn't find anything referring to this swap out. I saw several DRW Dully verses SRW swaps in one direction or the other though.

I bought the 2003 Quad-cab SRW 3500 Cummins 6 speed because I didn't want the extra width of the dually to drive around with. But now I'm wanting to buy a larger trailer and would like to have the dual rear wheels. I was told by a friend that the SRW and the Dual Rear Wheel Cab & Chassis were the same width rear axle. If They are I want to use a 6ft flat-bed with the dual rear wheels and maintain the narrower stance than that of a dually truck.

Is this a simple swap of changing studs in the rear with a flat bed and then swapping in the front spacers and using dual wheel rims? Thanks PROSOUTH

Hmm... Same rear axle? I'll be interested to see if that's true.

You can always upgrade the wheels and tires if you end up staying single. Put on 19.5" or 22.5" wheels and g rated tires...

I just checked this thread and had no reply until just now, so thanks for the reply. I was on another site looking at flat beds and found this info showing the difference in bed widths.

It shows three widths with my SRW using an 84" width. A Chassis Cab using a 94" width and a Dulley using a 97" width bed.

I was looking at a Chassis Cab unit the other day and observed that it wasn't as wide as the dulley and asked the owner about the bed size and he told me that my SRW was a Chassis Cab unit and it would change out with studs and front caps if I used a flat bed.

Anybody know for sure what will work? thanks

I may have just answered my own question. I see where the Chassis Cab unit only has a 34" wide frame verses the rest having a 38 " width.

Oh well, it was a thought/ What about the upgrade the wheels and tires if I end up staying single. Putting on 19.5" or 22.5" wheels and g rated tires?

I've been off of this site for quite a while and am extremely behind on mods to these trucks. Mine is a 2003 SRW Q-Cab six spd and only has 37,000 on it. So I am at the point of needing tires which is what sparked this idea to change to dual rear wheels for more traction and stability. With my tractor on the 10K trailer I pull it gets a little slippery sometimes taking off.

Whats a good way to go? Thanks Jim

Well the frame width is the same for dual or single - 38", but what a pain going to duals!!

As for traction, I get better with single wheels. More weight per square inch of tire. My dually wouldn't drive out of my side lot on wet grass. Of course duals have more float.

I was looking at 19.5" Rickson's, but they are only making steel wheels now, and they weigh so much!!! Vision makes a 19.5" aluminum, and so does Alcoa. Expect to pay about $300 per wheel.

Tires in 19.5" come in F and G ratings, and can carry about 4,500 pounds of weight each. The 22.5" are about the same, and these would be 16 ply tires. They don't ride so good some say, but they should last about 100,000 miles. Cost is around $300 a tire.

That being said and all my leads for 19.5" wheels drying up, I think I'm going with the Nitto Dura Grapplers. They are more of a heavy duty 'diesel' tire and are supposed to wear good, be very stable while towing, and quiet. I can get the 285/75R-17 for $207 mounted and balanced.

The Dura's are rated for 3970 pounds per tire and they fit on my stock 8" wide rims! Sounds just right for me. And they are a 34" tire.....

I hope you are right about all frames beijng the same, if so I'm going to convert mine to DRW as I'm looking at a 36 foot goose neck race trailer with front bunk quarters and I would like to have the stability and rear capacity of DRW's to pull this much larger trailer than I am currently pulling.

However, the bed shown below is for a Chassis/Cab and shows only a 34" wide frame width which would allow for an inside rear wheel with a narrow overall width less than a outside the bed dually. See below the frame width given for a Cab/Chassis. Is this a mistake?

Budsowner, a member on this forum, converted his SRW to a dually using Arrowcraft components.

All the second gen Dodges have the same frame width, 37 3/4". I've built flatbeds for SRW, DRW and Chassis cab models. Its kind of a pain for upfitting because the industry standard for utility, flatbed, dump beds etc is 34". You have to build the bed to fit or adapt it.

So you are also confirming that the frames are all the same width on the 2003 third generation models and I can just change studs and bolt on DRWs and go to a flat bed ?

I guess I will have to get under a Ton Chassis Cab and compare the dimensions and start looking for parts if so.
